hearing own voice echo in ear

I have been living with a blocked sensation and echo of my own voice in my left ear for about 5 years. I have just been maybe diagnosed with otosclerosis, but I have yet to find any symptoms on the internet to confirm that these are symptoms of otosclerosis. Has anyone with these symptoms been diagnosed and "cured" of these symptoms.

Re: hearing own voice echo in ear

can you tell how loud you are speaking? I am looking for an explanation why my elderly mum with good/borderline hearing has times when it appears a curtain comes down between her ear and jaw making it difficult for her to tell how loud she is speaking. No doctor able to give diagnosis, MIR scan has been done. she is very susceptible to earwax and sometimes needs syringing twice a month.

Re: hearing own voice echo in ear

Hi Jiri,

You could see another ENT - specifically a neuro-otologist. There are other diagnosis that could also have a blocked feeling in ear and hearing your own voice echo (autophony). To name a few - perilymph fistula, superior canal dehiscence syndrome, secondary endolymphatic hydrops.

Good luck!

Hi. Maybe it is due to the wax production - but, other than that, I don't know. Has she had a hearing test? A pressure test? A workup with a neuro-otologist might help.

Wishing you well -
Ms Lulu

Sounds like you and I have the same problem!! I have yet to get a true diagnosis and its driving me crazy. Although mine has been blocked for about a year and a half now, nothing relieves the feeling or pressure - have you found any relieve or answers??

Re: hearing own voice echo in ear

My ears have also had this blocked feeling for well over a year now. I also suffer from Autophony about 90% of the time and it really does drive me crazy. I have seen numerous ENT specialists and so far have still not got a diagnosis. I was convinced that I had Patulous Eustachian Tubes as the most common symptoms of this is a full feeling and the autophony, but apparently they tested me for that and it ruled it out. I am now on tablets for Menieres disease, but i am not convinced I have that as i don't have any vertigo at all. I think actually the doctors have no idea what is wrong and so just say 'oh it must be menieres'. It's amazing how much something like this affects your quality of life.

I have found that lying down helps to ease the symptoms and it gives me a break from the autophony too, and also avoiding going up hills or in elevators. Any sort of air pressure change sends my ears crazy. Also, drinking lots of water helps too. I will not give up on pestering the doctors though... I am only 33 and I refuse to live the rest of my life like this.

good luck everyone, and keep us posted on any progress

Re: hearing own voice echo in ear

Hi EKKO,

I hope you are still checking your Healthboard posts. Please check out my thread related to Vibration in ears under the name bonniedaddy. I am also getting disagreement among Doctors on what I have. I have done a lot of my own research on my symptoms but still have no definitive diagnosis. Maybe we can get this thread active again.
