I just found this forum and read through lots of posts and it made me think the people here know more about hearing problems than the doctor I just saw, so I just HAD to sign up so I can ask:-)
I am totally confused...but please let me start at the beginning..it will take a bit....
I lost as good as all hearing in my right ear. Not suddenly, it took about 5 years. When it started my doctor told me, after just the tune fork test, that I have otosclerosis and that it will get worst and I will end up needing hearing aids. I believed what he said and I didn't have insurance to more opinions so time just went by and my hearing got worst and worst. I couldn't get a job, I hardly can go to the grocery store because I don't hear what people say to me, but I found a clinic here in Tennessee and they send me to an ENT specialist last week where I finally had a real examination on my ear done. I was happy, but the outcome was bad. I didn't get the final diagnosis to see yet, he didn't really tell me if it is otosclerosis or not but the audiometry showed that I cannot hear any spoken word with my right ear, so hearing aids are out of the question because there's nothing to amplify and the only thing that may possibly help would be a anchored bone surgery ( I hope that's the right words, I didn't really understand it) My primary doctor is on vacation for one more week, so I didn't have a chance to talk about it all with her.
But yesterday something really strange happened....On Wednesday I had to go to the Emergency Room because I ran a 103 degree fever and had terrible hives all over my body due to a severe allergic reaction most likely to a new medication (Gabapentin) my doctor prescribed for back pain. There at the ER I got a shot of Prednisone and a "tapering off" prescription of Prednisone for 6 days. Yesterday at noon all of a sudden I heard my own voice echoing in my right ear, strange, kinda scratchy and canny sounding....but I never heard that before so I went to get me some headphones and plugged them into the radio. Of course I had to turn the volume way up but I COULD hear the words in the songs, I sure COULD!!!!
I am totally happy, totally confused and also pretty worried that I put way too much weight into this now and that it won't change nothing at all. If I am able to hear words I should be able to use a hearing aid at least, don't you guys think so too? I would like to know if anybody here in this forum had something like this happening too? If Prednisone could give me some of my hearing back?
I would really be thankful for some advices or answers here in the forum...if possible positive ones
Thanks a lot!!
PS: I hope I didn't make too many mistakes in my posting...my native language isn't English, it's German
