Thank you all so much for all your information. Just found your site 2 days before my st.surgery and you answered so many questions and helped me make my decision to keep my appt.
I had my surgery on my right ear this morning.
6:15 am arrived at hospital to get ready
talked to the preop nurse, anesthesiologist, and crna, surgeon arrived
at 7:20 am
7:25 am Started IV and gave me medicine to relax
7:30 am wheeled out of preop to operating room (no recollection of this
10:30 am woke up in recovery room, very tired, moderate pain in ear about
7 with 10 being the worst (I am a nurse so I'm pretty good at rating
11:15 AM 2 percocets with good effect...no dizziness, no nausea YAY
12:30 PM in parking lot with wheelchair waiting for my husband and
12:40 PM at dunkin donuts getting a LARGE hot coffee yummy, throat
hurts from intubation but not too bad about a 3-4
1:30 PM at pharmacy in parkinglot waiting for hubby to get percocet,
throat hurts more, coffee is gone...it helped for a while
2:45 PM home YAY. still not dizzy or nauseous, took compazine for
nausea just to avoid it, took amoxicillin to fight infection and took 2
percocets pain up to about a 7 again.
8:00 PM 2 percocets and a throat lozenger
1:00 AM still up and getting ready to sleep in the recliner to avoid
pressure in my ear, a little uncomfortable, throat pain and hoarse-
ness still a real pain in the butt little ear pain will take 2 percocets
and try to get some rest...probably shouldn't have had that big
coffee in the afternoon but it was GREAT
Overall, much less frightening than I planned on. No need for anxiety med before I went to the hospital, I was pretty calm. OH YEAH!!! I have a large bandage on my ear and when I block my good ear I actually can hear pretty darn good even with the packing and bandage. I look pretty goofy but who cares I think this really worked.
When the Doc came in after surgery I asked him why I felt like water was running all inside my ear...he stated that they soaked the bandages in antibiotic to fill it up and fight off any infections. Pretty bizarre feeling, thought I might be hemmorhaging (thats the ole nurse in me lol) Yes I am up at 1 am, dozed off a couple times this afternoon but pretty much laid back in the recliner and watched tv, just got direct tv yesterday and we ordered ALL the channels so I am just surfing around.
Discharge instructions stated that I could take the big honker of a bandage off in 48 hrs (whew! I don't intend to leave the house with that on), no bending with your head lower than your heart (well, I guess scrubbing the floor is out) I can squat if I want but I'm a big girl so if I go down I may not get up. The head lower than heart is for 1 month. Also, no lifting or pushing or pulling at any force over 15 lbs. for 1 month. Guess Nursing is out for a while...VACATION.
I'm still waiting for the other shoe to drop and have the bad stuff start happening but for now I am at peace. If wanted, I will post throughout this recovery page for anyone to read. Take care and LISTEN UP!!!
