Ringing Ears after an ear infection

Hi guys,

I caught a light flu Mid August and a couple days later I had blocked ears like there was pressure in it and my left ear started ringing. I have been to see a few doctors and I was told that my ear has cleared after taking a dose of antibiotics and ear drops.

It has been over 2 weeks now and the doctors say that my infection has gone from what they can see but the ringing in my ear is very LOUD and persistent (high pitch screech). I haven't been coping with the situation at all because of the level of sound it's making and I am now on anti-depressants.

I am having panic attacks, anxiety and even depression because of this. I haven't been able to eat and I have lost 4kgs in a week because of the anxiety I am experiencing.

I have made an appointment to see the Ear Nose Throat doctor but that isn't till the 8th of September as they are fully booked. In the meantime I'm not coping and I feel as if I'm going around the bend.

Does anyone know how long before the situation settles down? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Re: Ringing Ears after an ear infection

Hi there --

I've had ringing for the last 3 months after a strange bout of pressure in there. My pressure got relieved by a myringotomy (The ENT poked a hole in my ear drums) - The pressure went away, but that's when the ringing began. I don't know if we're in a similar boat or not. How are you feeling now? I know it's crappy, but... maybe you can be a little happy that yours is only in one ear and not both. :-\ Mine is in both and I want to strangle somebody! LOL... I have noticed it getting better over time. In fact, my left ear almost feels normal 75% of the time. The right one still gets me pretty regularly... But 9 times out of 10, it's a lower ring than it was in the beginning. In the beginning, I had about 4 different tones in each ear. It. Was. HELL!!

Please let me know how you're feeling!!

Jody

Re: Ringing Ears after an ear infection

Hi Jody, I'm sorry to hear that you also have a similar problem as I do. I'm not sure if the sound is getting better as at times I feel it is and other times It feels it hasn't changed. Nevertheless I wake up to the ringing and go to bed with the ringing and it still gets me down. No one around me understands and as they go about on their day to day life I feel as if I am misunderstood because they can't see anything wrong with me but yet I feel so out of it because I can't be me with the ringing constantly going without a break.

I must admit the sound is still loud and as I said it does bring me down. I went to they physio on Thursday and have to go back on Saturday next week. I had a MRI head scan and will get the results of that in a week. As far as the ENT specialist I have to see him in six weeks time. He said that in time the brain will push the noise away (whatever that means) I tried to get him to explain but he was in a rush and said some stuff that got me more confused.

In the meantime I am trying to cope with this by keeping busy as much as I can. I hope you are feeling better. I think it is a similar situation we are both in because when I got the flu I had a build up of pressure and I waited a couple weeks to get rid of that and when that left I still had the ringing.

I wish you good luck and a speedy recovery, please keep me posted.

Thanks

Re: Ringing Ears after an ear infection

Daniiella --

I felt like we could be similar, too. I'll definitely keep you posted. Right now, my right ear is driving me insane. I'd like to rip it out. I cried a lot today. I totally feel your pain. If you feel alone, come to this site.

I'm hoping for you, since it is just one ear, that it will heal up with time. I truly feel like my left one has come a LONG way compared to my right. If I can get one down, so can you.

Just remember, this can take weeks.. months.. hopefully not years. I feel like... for only being 3 months in, mine have gone through a lot of changes. I'm hoping that's a good thing, but I'm really not sure... Sometimes, I go onto Tinnitus forums and see what people post about their progress over the years... and I realize I've made that progress within months.

Hang in there.

Jody

Re: Ringing Ears after an ear infection

Hi Jody

Thanks again for those encouraging words. I do feel your pain as I am in a similar situation as yours. I have changed my life completely, I use to stay home quietly but since this I can't bare the noise in my ear so I go out and keep busy helping others and my family so I can try to forget the noise but somehow I hear it and go into panic attack from time to time.

I appreciate your response because no one around me has this and no one understands what I'm going through so It makes me feel so alone. I get a lot of headaches now at the back of my head and I'm waiting for the doctors reports to see what they have to say. Has the doctor sent you for an MRI?

Well lets hope that the both of us recover soon. Although the doctors say there is no cure for tinnitus but having said that many who have had this like us the noise has gone down but then again others say theirs never went away but I think that's due to older people when they lose their hearing.

I hope though that we will get well soon. Thanks again for your reply it helps to know someone understands.

Take care
Daniiella

Re: Ringing Ears after an ear infection

Hey.. yep, I sure do.

I've had MRIs as well as 5 other brain scans. I've had a spinal tap, i've had a ton of blood work.. I've had just about everything possible. And as far as I know, nothing has shown up. For a while there, I thought it was from my Thyroid problem, but I'm not so sure anymore...

I don't have headaches necessarily, but I do have ear pain and, more recently, fullness. I don't know if it's because I've been gettin a bit congested lately due to the weather change, or if the fullness is just a sensation and not really there... You know how the ringing can make you feel like your ear is full?? It's almost like it can feel like a physical presence...

What is yours like in the morning? Screaming at you? I've noticed that if I leave on soft music all night long via my computer.. The ringing is WAY less audible. It's still there, just relaxed. Maybe try that. The music I use is from a CD called "Dreams of Angels," but any soothing cds like that would work. This one is a mix of music and nature sounds. I keep the one on repeat that has the sound of crickets in it. It helps to mask it falling asleep, as well!!

I know these are all things we hate reading... b/c we'd much rather this dumb thing be gone. But, it does take time. I went to a birthday party at a loud bar lastnight and I'm laying here wondering if I should be regretting it. Not sure how much we are supposed to try to actually LIVE with this condition. I do, however, use ear plugs that cut back 30 decibels of sound. I'm having faith in that protection and trying to keep on... I hope you do, too. We're too young for this. :-\ How old are you anyways? I'm 29.

Re: Ringing Ears after an ear infection

Hi Jody

Thanks for the reply. I know what you mean about the loud noise it aggravates the situation making it harder to deal with after you leave a loud environment. I have been keeping away from large gatherings. Did they tell you to keep away from coffee, chocolate, tea and cola drinks? Those things make the ear ring louder due to them being a stimulant.

I'm older than you I'm 44. I cry a lot too cause of the situation but also stress contributes to this as well. I am trying to stay positive and keeping busy. I have just finished doing the housework so that kept me occupied and I'm going to go out soon so I'm not alone.

I do believe in time the noise will subside but it's hard during the loud times to keep positive. I sleep with the tv on for background noise and turn on the timer to turn it off after I'm asleep. I will go out and find some cd's of comforting music as I know that will also help. In other words we do what we have to do to get by.

Where are you from? I'm in Australia... Again I thank you for the encouraging words and look forward to when we are both heaps better.

Take care
Daniiella

Re: Ringing Ears after an ear infection

Hi just an up-date It has been 4 months now since the ringing in my ear and I have to say it has been a testing time for me. There are times were I can't cope and then again times where I can leave it behind. I don't know if this helps anyone but I heard on the radio that if you have ringing in the ear to take manganese supplements as you need quite a bit.

The other tablet the specialist prescribed for me was "Serc" which helps the blood flow to the inner ear which helps with the tinnitus noise. I noticed the day after taking both these the noise has been less. It's still experimenting times for me but as it helped me I thought I'd post and let others know to try it and hopefully it will help you as it has helped me.

It does take time but as the months goes on the noise lessens. I hope you all have good success, keep me posted. Merry Christmas to you all and I hope you have a happy and healthy 2012.

Re: Ringing Ears after an ear infection

Daniiella --

4 months for me was agony... I'm going into 6 and the last month as a whole has been MUCH MUCH better. I actually stopped taking one of my medications and it went down a LOT. I still have times where I'm frustrated, but I know it isn't killing me and I'm welcoming background noise to keep me sane. Prior to this month, I was in a bit of denial of the fact that I'd need background noise all the time to keep me sane, but... I do, so I keep it there

There have been a few mornings this month where I've woken up to a quiet room because someone in my house had turned off my TV and the ringing was very bearable. I'm noticing it more at night than I am in the morning. I don't know what that means, but when all of this first started, mornings were the LOUDEST!

I'm so happy that you're getting by. Trust me, 4 months is nothing. If you're noticing it coming and going and being a little less loud... you are probably on the road to success. It was so hard for me to believe that I could heal (it still is hard), but I know it's something I can tolerate now and my life isn't ending. Acceptance is key.

So glad you updated. Are you still having ear pain???

Re: Ringing Ears after an ear infection

Hi pinkjody

Thanks for the quick reply. I know exactly what you mean about the background noise as I do the same here I can't sit in a quiet room like I use to prior to this happening to me. I don't have ear pain or fullness in the ear only the ringing and It does get louder at night. In the morning it is less I think it's cause I'm relaxed and as the day goes on and I stress out a bit more the noise tends to get louder with stress.

I really believe those tablets have helped with the noise level. I really hope that in the new year to come our ringing will lessen because it's been a long journey for me as it has been for you.

Let me know how your progress goes as I have been thinking about you and wondering how you have been coping...

Thanks again
Daniiella

Re: Ringing Ears after an ear infection

Hey Daniella,

I read your thread as I've had similar symptoms and problems before the ringing.

Has your case improved at all? Do you find that the ringing is typically better when you wake up? (it is for me, I had to 'look' for it last couple of days in the morning).

Hi Hellouser,

By the sounds of it your ringing is way less than mine which is good for you. When I wake up I hear mine loud but when I get up and move around and keep busy I don't hear it as much unless I focus on it. But then again when I sit to watch Tv I hear it louder and it starts to annoy me.

I like to think it has improved but the past two months it hasn't it has been the same and to be honest some days it is that loud that I can't get on with my day and I struggle to the point where I just cry and withdraw from my day to day life.

It sounds as though your have a slight noise opposed to the loud noise I have but if anything generally the morning it is lower and it gets louder as the day goes on. I wish you luck and I hope yours doesn't get to the point mine is because this is the worst thing that has happend to me.

Take care and thanks for the post

Re: Ringing Ears after an ear infection

Hi there..

Just thought I'd chime in, as it's been a whole and I'm taking new roads with all of this... About a month ago, I saw a TMJ specialist... And what do you know!? My jaw is off track. My bite is all wrong. This is due to an injury I had to my face almost 8 years ago!! Just 2 days ago, I had my first orthotic put on my teeth or adjust my bite. I can't say the ringing has gone away, but we're still in the diagnostic stage... They will be experimenting with different mouth piece sizes until we reach maximum results. I'm hopeful, but not TOO hopeful! Im just protecting myself from a major letdown. :-/

In other news, I'm now in 8 months of tinnitus... It truly TRULY has become barely noticible. The mornings are very light.. The evenings bring a little more noise, but it's not driving me insane anymore. I started taking Celexa (just 10 mg) to take the edge off and it's helping. I'm no longer focused on how awful the tinnitus makes me feel. I don't feel lonely anymore and I dont feel like the only person on the planet that's suffering.

I hope you guys can gain something from this post...

Also... As far as Tmj goes... Your dentist may tell you you're fine, but a neuromuscular dentist is the only person who can tell you for sure.. Via ct scans and other computer generated tests... Might be worth a shot for you guys!

All the best...

Jody

Re: Ringing Ears after an ear infection

Hi Jody

That last post was interesting, I know that when I eat (chew) my ringing gets louder so I'm not at all surprised with what you said about your jaw. Two months ago my daughter went to get her teeth cleaned and she told me when the dentist pressed on a tooth she had ringing in her ear and when he stopped that tooth the noise went away. I thought I'd mention that to you because I think there is something in that after reading your post.

I know doctors don't know what causes tinnitus but we hold the secret (those of us who live with it) I am still waiting for the months ahead and hoping that this will ease off to a slight sound rather than hearing a jingling ringing noise loud all day because I admit it does my nerves in.

It's good we keep each other posted. I like hearing about your progress and I hope all goes well with your future doctor appointments.

Take care

Re: Ringing Ears after an ear infection

Hi!

Similar to the post below - I've had ringing in my ears for about 2 weeks. Last week I went to the doctor and I was told I have an ear infection...I've been taken tablets and ear drops since and luckily the infection has gone, however, to my disappointment the ringing has not gone and is driving me crazy!!!

I'm a very nervous person anyway, and this is just tipping me over the edge - I spend most of the time worrying that there is something terribly wrong with me even though I've seen 5 doctors in the last week (yes I know, crazy!) who all reassure me that nothing terrible is wrong with me. I also feel a bit heavy headed and the doc said I'm a bit congested..and of course I looked this up on the internet and that could well be because of the ear infection..

I would love for someone to tell me they've had/ have the same and that the ringing will go!
