Re: stapendectomy

Good Morning Clare....

Sounds like you have received excellent news...I am so happy that your hearing is good...and like I said it will get even better as time goes on. This happen to me..so more is yet come...

Not sure if you have the same in your other ear...Otosclerosis sp?..I did and that ear def. got worse over time. I have read that with this disease it usually doesn t get any worse over 50 years of age...not sure if this is true or not but what I have read..and I def. did not have 30% hearing back in 93 in that ear it was more...so for myself i can say it did progress over time.

As far as my hearing...right now I would say my new ear has more then the other...I can tell that ear is getting things alot more amplified..but I was told it will tone done and I have noticed in just the 5 weeks it has..I still need my cotton ball at times..but not like before..

You talk about your hubby and his super hearing. I know that after surgery I had the same where he could hear the stove beeping two rooms over and I still couldn t until I was closer. Guess some people like our hubbies do have super hearing... We can both forget about mumbling under our breaths LOL..only kidding...Love my hubby more then life..

Re: stapendectomy

Hi Cindy

Yes, I think my other ear is also affected by otosclerosis because there is an air-bone gap (not as big as the one was in my operated ear) and I think there is that drop down in frequencies (carhart notch???) which is at about 2kHz. The surgeon didn't actually say this but I saw a similar pattern in both ears when I looked at the graphs myself and have done some reading about it on the internet.

I think my good ear has been getting worse because my hearing problems have been getting worse. I often find I mishear people or have to ask people to repeat themselves. However, I have noticed this less recently because I think hearing with 2 ears helps even if there isn't an overall improvement.

Well, if it does get worse, I wouldn't be frightened of having another operation.

Good luck again for your hearing test. It must be in a few days now. I hope that your "new" ear is indeed better than the other one.

Re: stapendectomy

Hi Cindy

I guess it is still morning where you are. I hope your hearing test goes well this afternoon. It is my first day back at work today and everyone has been very supportive and interested in the operation. They left some chocolates on my desk with a note saying "welcome back" on them, which was nice. It is going to take me a few days to get back into working again though.

Re: stapendectomy

Hello Clare...

Well..went to my dr.s today and my audio in my new ear is normal now. My Dr. told me that I have the hearing of a 10 year old child LOL..he said it is 100% my other ear is not as good...last years stapedectomy..and I actually have felt like the hearing has got worse since my surgery...they tested it and it is exactly where it was back in January..He said that my hearing in my other ear is not perfect..but so much better then it was after Feb. of last year..I could not operate without a hearing aid...he said that my heairng is perfect in one tone but not so good in the other...but I will take it. this is the third stapedectomy and I know I am lucky to have what I do...and also due to that artery that runs in there... I am just happy to have both ears now...it is amazing to hear from both ears.. He told me that I will have no problems ....

So I am ending this day with a BIG smile on my face and just so thankful for what I have...and that is hearing with two ears...

How are you feeling?? How is the hearing?

Cindy

Re: stapendectomy

Hi Cindy

Congratulations on your wonderful results. My 8 year old son can hear lots of stuff which I can't so, if your hearing is like a 10 year old's it really must be excellent. Your other ear probably just feels stuffy in comparison to your excellent new ear.

My hearing doesn't seem to have changed that much over the last few days. I think I am mainly thinking about being back at work though and not so much about my ear. The loud traffic noise problem seems to be less now however. I keep on watching TV lying on my unoperated ear then lifting my head up to see what the difference is. The difference between the hearing in my ears doesn't seem to be big but I think my unoperated ear is still slightly better.

I bought a tuning fork (probably the wrong frequency) and, when I place it in the middle of my head the sound is a lot more central than it was although still slightly towards my operated ear.

Anyway, congratulations again on your results. Are you still using the cotton wool ball because the sound is so loud from that ear?

Re: stapendectomy

Good Morning Clare....

I still have to use it when I blow dry my hair and normally before the day is over I will put it in there because the kids voices just get to be unbearable at times. The only way I can describe it is it gets so loud I feel like it is vibrating in there...so I was told to use the cotton to help that out..my dr did say it will get better but by no means am i even complaining...I am so happy to have my hearing....

I do believe what you are saying about it feeling different because of my other ear working so well is correct...Was told that my brain is still learning due to that ear not working in so long...and my right ear is better then they had expected due to three surgeries in that ear but mainly that artery that runs thru there...I certainly didn t have any problems hearing before my new ear w just that one ear, certain tones don t come in as well...I just felt like maybe my hearing had got worse on the right side but they said no still the same...so it is just my new ear works so well I can hear the difference...I will take it thank you very much!!!

Re: stapendectomy

Hi Cindy

It must be really great going from needing a hearing aid in that ear to hearing like a 10 year old. I have never used a hearing aid , just relied on my good ear to hear, but it must have been pretty annoying for you.

I was just wondering if you have taken any of the numerous online hearing tests and phone hearing tests which exist? I get mixed results from them. There is one by a manufacturer of hearing aids which I even get bad results for my good ear with. Most other ones I get normal results with. 3 weeks seems like a very long time before I get a proper test. It would be good if there was some sort of test which you could do every day and then, if other people had done it, you could see how the recovery generally went after the operation.
