Re: 2nd ear stapedectomy for otosclerosis

Hi Appleboyboy

Hmmm, the squeaking sound does sound a bit strange. Have you phoned up your surgeon to ask him/her about it? I would. Yes, I also had a hearing test after about 6 weeks and that was the first official one. However, there are lots of online/telephone hearing tests which you can do to get an idea how your hearing is and whether it is improving or deteriorating. I got quite addicted to doing these hearing tests. Try searching for "online hearing tests", "hearing test products", "audiometer online" or other similar things.

Re: 2nd ear stapedectomy for otosclerosis

I did the online tests, the ones which test your hearing in noisy background, my result was within normal limit. But the audiogram one I did, I was disappointed because my operated hear is not mormal and is only about 10dB better than my non- operated ear which also has otosclerosis. Does the hearing improve with tine? I am now 3.5 weeks post op. I hope it will continue to improve. Mum said my ear canal seems to be partially blocked from? Old clot. But I don't dare to clean it. I m seeing my surgeon in 2.5 weeks.

Re: 2nd ear stapedectomy for otosclerosis

Hi all
I have been offline for a while but thought I would give an update on hearing test results. My left ear now has 'normal hearing'! Yeah....
I have a little loss in higher frequencies but I even knew my hearing was much better!! I got better results from this stapedectomy compared to the last.
One thing that has just developed but is most likely unrelated to the op is that I am experiencing pain when pulling ear lobe and in my neck glands. I went to the dr and he thinks I have an infection further back - he can't see anything but said it is nothing to do with stapedectomy. I started antibiotics yesterday but have had no improvement. I have noticed no change in hearing - thank goodness. Has anyone else experienced this? Op was on 27th March.

I was told that your hearing won't stabilize until at least 8 weeks after surgery, so I wouldn't worry about the results you're getting less than 4 weeks ago. IIRC, my ear was still draining fluids at that time. Also, on line tests have a very wide variation. My surgeon had me go to a professional audiologist after the surgery at 8 weeks, and then at 6 months. I think that you would see much more improvement with a professional doing the test.

My surgery was April 2011, and I still occasionally get pain in my operated ear. My surgeon doesn't think it's significant. Personally, I think it must be from very small scars in the ear, but I never discussed that with my surgeon.

Re: 2nd ear stapedectomy for otosclerosis

Hi Fantine
On completion of the 5 day course of antibiotics my pain had improved. I went for the scheduled visit with the specialist on Thursday and he said the pain was most likely TMJ. When i lye on the operated ear it not not really feel totally normal yet - as you said must be some healing going on. It is not as painful as before the antibiotics though and I can now pull the ear lobe without cringing.
I am off from Aus to the US on Tue - the ultimate test as I am flying on many planes. Fingers crossed!

Remember to take a decongestant (30 min prior to take off) unless you have a contraindication to doing so. Also make sure you have gum or something to sip on during take off and landing. Just swallow alot to keep the pressure equalized in the ear. Let me know how it goes. Best of luck to you.
Christine (I plan to do this every time I fly, at least for the next few months just to be on the safe side.)

Re: 2nd ear stapedectomy for otosclerosis

Hello Lhanie2012....

I also had the same problem and now have both of my ears with stapedectomies performed on them. I know how you feel and it is awful not be able to hear what is going on around you.... I also had to use a hearing aid to be able to function now I do not with both my ears hearing great. It also sounds like you have tinninus in your ears...ringing..chirping sound...I also had this but it go so much better since my hearing was restored...

You need to go to an ENT (ear, nose, throat) Doctor and he/she will be able to run the necessary tests.

Re: 2nd ear stapedectomy for otosclerosis

Hi, I have read a lot of the stapedectomy post op experiences and I'm still unsure if my experience is normal. I am 8 days post op and I cannot hear anything from the ear they operated on. All I hear is a high pitched continuous noise (which I heard before the surgery). The surgery was done with a laser through my ear and the surgeon said everything went well after, but after getting instructions from the nurse I realized he made an incision behind my ear. I was was told it was done to stabilize the ear drum.

It seems like everyone hears at least something by day 8 and I'm concerned that this is not normal. I was very dizzy the first couple days post op, I'm still a little dizzy here and there but nothing like before. The pain is not bad and I have a little blood in the cotton ball everytime I change it. For a couple days my voice was so loud inside my head, but that went away. I know they put packing in my ear, but unlike a lot of the people that post about this, I can't feel it and I can't see anything at all when I look into my ear. Also, I cannot taste anything on the left side of my mouth.

Does anyone have any insight on my experience and if hearing nothing at all after 8 days is normal?
