40% hearing loss seems quite a lot to me so it is not surprising that you have problems in some situations. I had hearing loss in one ear which luckily was caused by otosclerosis, which there is an operation to correct. If your hearing loss is caused by something else, though, hearing aids are unfortunately probably your only option.
It must be really difficult for you at the moment and your life would probably be made a lot easier by hearing aids. I can understand why you don't want them but I would give them a try if I were you.
I can honestly say that I have worn a hearing aid and it really was not bad at all...I looked at all I gained from wearing it...being able to actually hear conversations that were going on around me.. I can say that I loved my hearing aid and it gave me back my life... Like Clare...I too have otosclerosis...I am also very lucky to have my hearing restored but Dec. 2010 my incus eroded causing me to lose my hearing in my right ear which at the time was the only ear that worked...My first stapedectomy was done in 1992 which was a complete success... My left ear had under 30% hearing and now was my good ear... My dr. gave me a hearing aid to borrow until my surgery in Feb. I honestly could nt follow any conversations at all..and when this little aid was put in my ear...AMAZING! I could hear again.... If my dr recommended me to get one I wouldn t hesitate too... It truly made my life wonderful while I had it. I actually went in to buy one and wanted a purple one..My comment was if I have to get one then I want it to be pretty... I was fortunate enough to have my hearing restored in both ears one year later.... but honestly..I wouldn t hesitate to get a hearing aid if needed.
I am not sure if you are aware but they give you a trial period...and you might also want to ask your dr. if they have a loaner you might beable to try to see how you feel about it. I had a very small one that hooked on my ear...you could not see it and I was able to do high impact aerobics and it didn t move...no one knew I even wore it unless I told them..
Thx for your reply, i will check with my DR about loaner or for few weeks of trial period, meanwhile can you share me your Hearing AID model no and also other sufficient details of the hearing aid, so that i can procure one.
