Stapedectomy post op symptoms

Hi All,

This is my first post. I have been to this forum many times but not seen any of them what symptoms I have after the operation. Now i am post op 12 days...done operation under general anasthesia & then dischared on 2nd day. Doctor told me to take antibiotics for first 10 days. After the operation my experience was same as others..vibrations, loud sound......I was hearing easily vibrations of the plates, doors etc for 10 days....two days back doctor removed the packing of the outer ear and also removed stuff from the canal. As far as I know after removing the ear packing you start hearing well....not great but atleast the same as before the surgery.....In my case I am not able to hear as same as what I was able to hear before the surgery....I had 50 DB loss before the surgery....Now am able to hear but not great ......Doctor told me to put some drops in the ear as there is some packing still in side the ear & it has to meld then my hearing will be improve....

These all things came as strange to me....Just wanted to know, Am i on the right track or not....is there any chance that it will get worst....

Requesting to all of you to suggest the way forward.....

Thanks

Aj

Re: Stapedectomy post op symptoms

Hi AJ. I used to come on to this forum a lot before and after my similar operation. Best advice I was given was to be patient which is very hard when you read of people having instant improvement. I had to wait quite a few weeks before I had a big improvment as the packing has to disolve along with any scars that are also inside and more importantly the middle ear will take time to clear too. I have a titanium prosthesis in my ear. When I had my first big improvement it was like my ear popped and someone put the volume up and everything became very clear. Only thing I have experienced along with others is that you dont seem to notice the hearing going down again until it suddenly pops and goes loud again. This eventually stopped although it does come happen sometimes even now making me think the prosthesis has fallen out. Remember not to try and pop your ears by yourself using the thumbs on the nostrils and blowing as this could damage the operated ear. I imagine you have been told all this already. Give it a little more time and patience and be positive with the things you notice that have improved already even if very slight. Hope this helps. Steve.

Re: Stapedectomy post op symptoms

Dear AJ,

I am glad that I saw your post on the forum, I think it is going to help me. I have been suffering from Otosclerosis and need to undergo Stapedectomy surgery very soon.
Very first thing I need you is, Should I go for the surgery or not? and if yes, since you are based in Dubai and me to which doctor you would suggest me to ?

I would sincerely appreciate if you could guide me through.

Thanks,
Piyush
