heart rate/ holding breath - Heart Disorders Message Board

hello to all,
the other day, my and my friends where having a breath holding contest. in the middle of doing so, i felt my heart pounding extramly hard inside of me and noticed that it was beating very fast. I was really conserned about this, so i decided to listen to my heart under the sethiscope. when i did so, here is what happend. at the beginning of holding my breath, my heart rate went down from about a 90-100 beats to around 60 and was skipping beats every now in then. after about 10 seconds, my heart rate went up, but this time it was around 160. when finally let my breath out, it was pounding again, and skipping beats. and, it also sounded like it had a third heart sound kind of like (lub tri dub lub tri dub) and i felt very dizzy. after about 2 more min.s the third heart sound went away. is this normal for a 13 year old? what does this mean?

seems normal to me. i think this is probably your body responding to lack of oxygen. if it bothers you....i would stop holding your breath.

It's called sinus arrythmia. It's a completely normal rhythm. When you breathe in, heart rate increases, and when you breath out it decreases. However, if you have breathed out it may temporarily decrease until you start to deprive yourself of oxygen and so the heart begins to beat quickly to try and continue pumping what remaining oxygen it has around.
