question about cold meds and my PVC's - Heart Disorders Message Board

i think it was around in december that i went to the doctors for the flu, at the time, i had the extra heart beats with the long pauses, he gave me AntiHisemeins(sp? you get the point) now i understand that taking those increases your heart rate. now would they have a effect on your heart, maybe making my PVC's worse? or would that not have an effect, just dont take them while on the Toprol xl?

Sure,
I'd expect that MOST antihistamines would make any heart rhythm irregularities worse. They are prestty much contraindicated for people with ANY cardiac concerns.

I've always understood that decongestants are worst than antihistimines for speeding up the heartrate. Decongestants constrict the small blood vessels that surround the heart. My doc always told me to get Chlorasiden (not sure that's how it's spelled), because it's the least likely one to affect the heartrate.

well i mean what im asking is this, if i told it for a couple days, will it effect my heart in the LONG run? even then i really did not notice anything. But thats what i want to know, long run issues, if there will be any

Taking antihistimines won't affect you anymore in the long run than any other meds you take on a daily basis. In my opinion, I think antihistimines are less likely to cause a long-term problem than beta blockers. Antihistimines are nothing more than a med to dry up your sinus passages. That's all. A beta blocker would be more of a concern to me. I wouldn't want to take that long term since there's no clearly documented evidence on what the long-term effects are on your heart.
