Stopped taking the Toprol xr

I recently stopped taking the Toprol 50mg xtended release. I was taking it for fast heartbeat and occassional PVCs. I felt it was a waste of time because it wasn't working. I don't like meds anyway. All of my heart tests and bloodwork came back normal, so I opted to stop the Toprol. I decided to go the natural route instead and try magnesium and potassium supplementation because I noticed my potassium was low on my blood report. Doctor didn't mention it - I just happened to notice it.

I only took the Toprol for 2 weeks before deciding to stop. I weaned down to 1/2 tab per day (25mg) for 4 days and then 1/4 tab (12mg) for another 4 days. Then I stopped. Is that enough? Can I expect any unusual crazy symptoms to jump up at me tomorrow or the next day?

Right now I feel okay.......

Re: Stopped taking the Toprol xr

I stopped taking it because it was driving my heart nuts, I mean I was having these episodes of skipped beats every other minute where before it was about twice a week. I switched to a calcium channel blocker, cardizem without slowly going off of toprol. I didn't have the symptoms until after about 5 weeks of taking the toprol, and I'm not sure if it was from dropping it or taking magnesium that stopped the arrythmia. Perhaps you didn't allow it enough time to actually start working for you.

Re: Stopped taking the Toprol xr

Actually I didn't want to give it time to work for me. I made a mistake in starting it in the first place. It's not natural to take a drug to change the way a "healthy heart" functions. I decided to try the natural supplement route first and give my body what it naturally needs to see if that helps. I should've did that first before even starting the toprol. I'm taking a multi mineral supplement to up my electrolyte levels.

Thanks for your response !!

Re: Stopped taking the Toprol xr

zzzlady,

For such a short time taking the Toprol, I doubt that you'll have any trouble with your weening scheme. If your heart gets "racy" you can always take 1/4 tab for a couple more days.
