Hi, Im taking Altace and have been for about 4 months, I have developed a very strong dry hacking cough, I was wondering what some of you may take in place of Altace to prevent the Cough that im having. Thanks for any suggestions. Im sure my Dr. will fill me in,,,just thought I would prepare myself.
Hey Steven....a cough is a VERY common side-effect from the class of drugs you're on called the ACE inhibitors. They increase a certain type of molecule in your lungs called the leukotrienes, and these cause mild inflammation and thus invoke the coughing reflex. Often, you can be switched to a class of drugs known as the ARB (angiotensin receptor blockers) and the cough will go away. ARBs can also cause cough, but less so than the ACEis.
