help???doctor cant find anything wrong so far

I am 35 years old, about july of 2003 I noticed that my heart would beat rapidly for no known reason and skipped heart beats, plus I was experiencing what i call episodes by this I mean I would have episodes where I would get lightheaded, pale, dizzy, weak and feeling faint.I went to doctors and had stress test, holter test and echo. All the doctor found wrong at that time is a rapid heart rate,so he put me on Metoprolol 50mg a day.For the most part since then the medication has been working except for a few of the episodes. In the past 2 weeks I have been experiencing even at rest rapid heart rate, pounding heart beat felt in chest and throat, fluttering, skipped heart beat and have experienced extra heart beats.Went to see doctors last week and they did blood work, echo and I wore the 24 hour holter,so far blood test are ok and show nothing is a miss.I am now waiting for echo and holter test to come back.I have spoken with a friend a nurse who was surprised to hear I was on Metoprolol for rapid heart rate. There is heart disease in my family,my mom is only 58yrs old has already had steints put in.
I dont know what to do,so far all test show everything is fine, all I know is that my heart seems be having some type of problem.Has anyone else had this happen to them and what was done to figure out the problem? I just bought a bowflex but I am affraid to use it.Thank you for any responses I recieve.

Re: help???doctor cant find anything wrong so far

Hello. I am 32 years old and the same things are happening to me. With the exception that I also get nausea with the dizzy/lightheaded/weak/feel faint episodes, mine started about 2 weeks ago. It seems worse in the morning and eases up in the afternoon to eve. Never really is completely gone though. I've had an echo 2 years ago that showed mild Mitral Valve Prolapse. They've done bloodwork, physical exams, etc...I've been to 3 different Dr.s and the ER twice and they all say stress....anxiety. I am a very anxious person, but I just don't believe thats what is causing this.

Anyway I had another echo 2 days ago and I'm waiting on results. I also get pain in my neck on the front sides. Anyway, I hope it helps to know someone else around your age is getting similar symptoms. Hope all goes well. Let us know.

Re: help???doctor cant find anything wrong so far

I also would get the nausea some times with my episodes but not every time. I just want them to find out what is going on inside me and fix it,I have talked to friends and one of them stated that their brother would have the same episodes and his was from anxiety or panic attacks,I have not had both the episodes and the palps, skipped heart beats and rapid heart rate and extra heart beats at the same time,I do know that when I do have these episodes that I feel real yuky, some times the episodes are mild some are so bad I want to go to er,I also have been asked many times if I was feeling well cause I looked realy pale usually I am not feeling the greatest when asked.I have also noticed over the past few months that my muscle strenght in both arms are not very strong,I have a hard time just holding my blow dryer for over 3 minutes, after that my arms start to feel like rubber and very weak.I have read that the metoprolol is used for rapid heart rate but my body must have gonnin used to it.so I dont know if I should continue to take.Well all we can do is hope that our tests shows something and the doctors can fix us.Thx again for your reply and best wishes to you,I will keep this post updated with test results.

Re: help???doctor cant find anything wrong so far

You haven't said what kind of doctor is treating you... your PCP or a cardiologist. If you're not seeing a cardiologist, make that your next move. And be persistent. I've been through a frustrating time the past six months, myself. I'm 48 and my symptoms are slightly different than yours, but the frustrations are the same. All my tests have been negative. I even had a heart cath done several days ago... also normal. The cardiologist told me flat out, "Your heart is normal. There's nothing more I can do for you." While I'm glad there are no blockages, I'm still having symptoms that are affecting my day-to-day life and I'm back to square one. Hang in there. Hope you get your answers, too.

Re: help???doctor cant find anything wrong so far

Hi All, Just thought I'd jump in here. I was diagnosed with Mitral Valve Prolapse when I was 28. I get the dizziness, PVC'S (skipped beats), always aware of heartbeat, sometimes it would race up to 120 beats.mnute. Can't sleep on left side because I can always feel my heart. I see my primary care physician who is an internist, as well as a cardiologist. MVP is a benign condition, usually never causing any stenosis of the valve, although I guess rarely it can. I found some really good books on Mitral Valve Prolapse Syndrome 2 yrs ago. The doctors don't belive (for the most part) that this cause all the other problems MVPers have. Anxiety, fatigue, low tolerance for physical activiites, low blood volume, etc. MVP is very common, especially among women, although men can have it too. But you should definetly see a cardiologist for good tests. An echo would show valve abnormalities. It helps me a lot with the PVC and heart pounding to hydrate with water. Caffeine, alcohol, smoking will exacerbate the odd beats.
Get the tests and let us know how you are doing. Good luck to you.

Re: help???doctor cant find anything wrong so far

Thank you for your reply,I am seeing my family doctor at this point,he has done an echo and 24 hour holter test.I am still waiting for results.Should have results back by 5/11/05.2 years ago I also had these tests done but nothing was found ecept a rapid heart rate and was told I had anginia. At that time doctor put me on 50mg of Metoprolol. Is it possible for some one at the age of 35yrs old to have anginia? There is heart problems in my family.
I just hope one of these test show something. The last 2 days I have had this pain between my shoulder blades about where a womens bra would be snapped together,Today I also experienced a little chest pain between my breasts I have experienced this pain a couple of times over the past 2 years. One day it was pretty bad,I actually had to grab at my chest it hurt so bad and pain lasted about an hour. The pain was brought on by me stepping up on a chair with arms above my head to hold some dry wall to the celling while my husband screwed it up.I was very pale felt very weak, sick to my stomache, faint and felt tired. My family thinks I'm crazy becuz doctors haven't been able to find anything wrong.I know my body, something is out of wack.I will keep yas posted, thx again.

Re: help???doctor cant find anything wrong so far

You are not crazy, Christina. Don't let anyone convince you otherwise. Sounds like you have some doubts about your diagnosis of angina. That's not a common diagnosis for a woman of 35. I'm not saying it's wrong, but I'd definitely be thinking about consulting with a cardiologist. You have every right to ask your family doctor for a referral. You owe it to yourself. I would suggest that the next time you experience pain severe enough to have you clutching your chest and feeling faint, you need to get to the ER. If nothing else, they'll at least be able to monitor your vitals at a time when you're actually experiencing symptoms. That could be a tremendous help in identifying your problem. I know it's a long shot, given your age, but is there any chance you could be entering early menopause or experiencing pre-menopause symptoms which, by the way, can sometimes be mistaken for heart related symptoms in women.

Re: help???doctor cant find anything wrong so far

Thank you so much for your support.I do wonder about the anginia diagnosis,If he suspected I have anginia, why hasnt he sent me off to a
cardiologist??? He did send me off to a cardiologist 2 years ago when my problems began and I had the normal stress tests done but nothing was found by the cardiologist.Thats why I am a bit confused over all of this.I dont know if this makes a difference or not but I did have a hysterectomy 5 months ago but I have been having problems for about 2 years now.I am waiting on results from an ech and holter test.If they come back normal I dont know what to do next.

Re: help???doctor cant find anything wrong so far

I have a very good book called "All About Eve." It's a woman's health guide. It says that "menopause brought on suddenly by the removal of the ovaries... tends to cause more dramatic sensations and problems than does natural menopause." This can include hot flashes, heart palpitations, sharp climb in the bad cholesterol, "and a whole host of other problems are often exaggerated and quickened when menopause occurs suddenly." Did your doctor tell you that you would likely go through early menopause as a result of your hysterectomy, Christina? That could be what's going on with you. I hope your tests have good results. Either way, you still need answers. I would find a good cardiologist. If your family doctor won't refer you, then find one on your own. And if you're not already seeing a good gynecologist to handle your post-hysterectomy treatment, you should probably find one of those, too. Consider a woman doctor. they tend to give more attention and understanding to your symptoms. Your family doctor may be wonderful and excellent for general health care. But, for all his good intentions, he is likely not a specialist in cardiac medicine or gynecology. There is nothing wrong or disloyal about consulting a specialist. It's your body, honey. No one cares more about it than you do. Will be watching to see how the tests come out.

Nancy

Re: help???doctor cant find anything wrong so far

Hi Again Wolflover, Sorry you've had so many problems. It stinks when drs can't find anything. And I totally agree with you. You are the one living in your body, and I think you or anyone else knows when something isn't right. Keep you dr on his toes, and don't let him off the hook. If if thinks it's angina, then press him about seeing a cardiologist. I have similar pain that goes from front to back, or back to front, and it is frightening. And I think you deserve a solid diagnosis. I know mine comes from the MVP, so I deal with it, but it's still scary. I hope your test results all come out good tomorrow. I'll keep you in my prayers.

Re: help???doctor cant find anything wrong so far

I called my family doctor today for an app tomorrow for this pain in my back, they have my echo and holter tests and want to talk to me about them,I take this as they have found something going on there.I am very nervous and scared. My doctor has never wanted me to come in to talk about tests that were negative.I dont think that I have gone into menopause yet becuz I still have my left ovary and havent had any symtoms so far.I will post after I get home from doctors. Thanks for all the replies and support.

Re: help???doctor cant find anything wrong so far

Sorry, Christina. I just assumed you'd had a full hysterectomy. And the symptoms you're having can also be symptoms accompanying menopause. Anyway, take a deep breath and don't panic. If they did find something, remember you have every right to ask for a referral to a cardiologist. Will say a prayer for you tonight. Let us know how it goes.
