Proper Diet

I am writing this for my mother who has blockage and has had 2 stents put in about 3 years ago. She is wondering if through proper diet and excersise you can reverse the plaque buildup in your arteries?, or does this just slow down the buildup of new plaque?

Thanks

Re: Proper Diet

tjwilli,
It is certainly our dream and HOPE that some reversal can take place. There is some slight evidence of plaque diminution with a really Draconian diet...almost NON-fat, non-meat, non-sugar kind of torture.
But with the advent of potent blood lipid lowering drugs, combining these with a VERY healthy and still attainable levels of eating, the hope of plaque reversal is growing.

My approach is to do everything I can within reason dietarily and use every method to lower my blood lipids and arterial inflammation while keeping my body-fat and dietary fat as low as possible, use statins and low dose niacin and keep a close monitor on everything I can (frequent blood esting), while exercising as much as I can without falling over from exhaustion. My reasonable goal is to prevent any new plaque but my fervent HOPE is to remove some that is already there...and burn it away in the gym.
