very low heart rate.
I was just wondering if any of you in this 'heart section' has what I have?
My heart beats at about 50 beats a minute in the daytime getting up to a whopping 70 if Im excited or afriad.
At night or if I rest in the afternoons it drives me mad as it can and does drop below 40 beats per minute! somtimes I get really bad chest pains, I go white with blue lips and sweat all over like a bucket of water has been tipped onto me, I get chest pain that spreads out from the middle of my breast bone up to my throat, jaw and down my left arm , christ, it is so bad that in the past I have passed out , begged my husband to knock me out and havent been able to breath.
MY oxygen level falls to about 80% somtimes lower, the pain comes on in waves getting stronger and stronger ( I do use G.T.N.) it leaves me so pale and tired that I cannot do anything for two one or days after an attack.
Do you have this? if you do what has your cardiologist suggested? mine just says I should be lucky I have such a low heart beat! apparently real fit people have low heart beats...............I think my cardiologist needs glasses or a kick up the bum! because I am two stone over weight have R.A. Autonomic Nerve Disfunction, Raynaurds , a hole in my heart and leaky valves
and am a granny of four..............oh! yes very athletic mate! ( not)

Re: very low heart rate.
Thanks for your answer,
I'm not or have ever been on beta blockers, and I've never had an angiogram and havent had a ultasound or echocardiogram for about ten years. I do have 'at times' very low blood pressure caused by this A.N.D.
I am a bit over weight still ( lost 28lb - 21lb to go) but I had the low heart rate 18 years so its not somthing I can attribute to weight gain. I started to get the 'chest pain attacks' 10 days after my second baby was born ( now 21) when I had septicemia, pulmonary odema ,heart + kidney failure and have been getting them ever since! As a non smoker all my life I have also had a shadow on my lung ( some years back) Sometimes getting a static shock off things will set off my chset pains!
My caridologist knows my heart rate drops to below 40 at night ( when I get them the most) as he has done tests and it has been proven , but he just keeps telling me that I should be 'grateful' my heart beat is low!!!! never mind the pain, blue lips, sweatting and sometimes passing out! He knows I have this hole in my heart and the rest but does nothing but check me!
Its almost as if he is playing 'the waitting game' , sometimes when my hubby is watching me have a chest pain attack he gets really worried , he thinks one day I will just stop breathing becuase my heart beat becomes so low he cant get a pulse ( faint and thready) My O2 level is always checked when hubby finding I can no longer take the pain calls an ambulance , they check it .........its low, they check my heart ...........its low .
Into hopsital I go I'm put onto heart monitors..............this is a good one......becuase the alarms keep going off , warning heart beat is dropping out still ,not only do they lower the alarm level , but after that becuase I'm still dropping they get fed up off sorting the monitors out that they switch the monitor off!
So no more readings can be taken as to whats still going on inside of me, having waited another 24 hrs to see a consultant my heart is starting to get back to normal, consultant says 'well its all gone now , go home ' and so begins the next circle of pain, ambulance, monitors off, consultant, home.............................
Hi Holeinheart, I also have a slow heart rate at times and experience exactly what you describe. I also have a hole in my heart and 2 leaky valves and i'm a granny too. A young one (i think). lol. Have you had your hole repaired? I have an ASD, what type is yours? I have acquired secondary pulmonary hypertention, an enlarged heart, valve damage and arrythmias as a result of not having the hole diagnosed and repaired sooner. I am in my 40's and have been having serious health problems for about the last 10 years but unfortunatly they felt it was nothing more than depression and anxiety. It became visually apparant that i was in congestive heart failure about 4 months ago and now i am awaiting surgery to repair the hole and repair my tricuspid valve. The only meds they can give me at this point is lasix to get rid of the fluid and 2 asprin aday to prevent a stroke. I have no other heart problems other than the hole i was born with and the complications i have acquired as a result of that, so no other meds will help with the symptoms. It is very common to have low saturation levels, low heart rate, feel light headed or faint at times and chest pain. I also had problems when i was pregnant both times with the same things you describe. The first thing they asked me when they found the hole was, did i have any problems with childbirth? I am extremly tired all the time and unable to do even small tasked without being short of breath. I certainly has seemed to affect my circulation as my hands and feet turn blue and white, i get terrible night sweats but when my heart rate is low during the day i can also be sweating. You mentioned you hadn't had a echoe in 10 years? If you had a hole in your heart then they would want to monitor yearly, exspecially if you haven't had it repaired? Even if you had it repaired some time ago, you would think they would do an echo or a TEE to see what was going on with it? I have talked to a great number of people who still have problems even after the hole is repaired. You also mentioned that you have leaky valves? this certainly could account for some of your symptoms but then again if they now that you have leaky valves then it makes no sense why they wouldn't do an echo to even check the status of them? Somebody with leaky valves and a hole in their heart should get more than a holter monitor. Sounds strange to me.

Re: very low heart rate.
Thanks for the reply Born2Bwild, you think its strange, we think its almost verging on negrect from my consultant!
He will not except that any of my problems are linked !
When I had my first child I had a terrible time with her and had to be put under and she was delivered, my second I had as I said above and my third I had pre-eclampsia and post toxemia! problems with child birth is an understatement!!!
My own doctor pulls her hair out each time I have a really bad 'attack' because she hopes that this time the consultant will do somthing............he doesnt!
They found a small hole in the back of my heart, but apparently before they could really have a clear look at it I became 'distressed' as they had only sedated me to put the camera down my throat and into my chest to look at it.So that was it!
They found years ago the leaky valves , I feel that I am being pushed aside, the reason? because they dont actually know what it is that I have and it would 'waste' hospital time and money to find it.
So as I said its a game of wait and see.
One thing I have done is , some years ago I wrote a letter to my solicitor explaining all my symptons etc. and should I die of heart failure or a massive heart attack he will take action against them in full producing letters I have sent to my consultant asking for help as the pain is excuciating at times and I am worried its getting worse as I get older. The strange thing is I didnt have any health problems until I had my second child and suffered 'heart failure' then when I had my son 14 years ago my health has been going down hill ever since, until here I am with all these problems , stuffing painkillers in like made day after day, and having to have ( controlled drugs) patches slapped on me just to keep me going!
I wouldnt give my kids up or go back and not have had them , but my health has taken a bit of a dive since I became a mum !
I have 3 kids, 4 step kids and 4 grandkids ! + a furry bottomed critter (dog) who is attatched to my right leg by a piece of elastic ( or thats what it seems)

Re: very low heart rate.
Had a really 'bad' night last night, silly person that I am did a bit to much yestarday, made a chocolate fudge cake, a lemon meringue pie and a pasta dish, ( when should have had my two hours sleep on the bed) by 7pm last night I was feeling a bit 'off' you know the sort of thing you cant quite put your finger on it , but somthings just not right! Went to bed as normal (Ha! 9.pm's NOT a normal adult time) took all my 'potions' and fell asleep at about 12.30am .
Woken up rather abruptly at 3.00am by hubby falling out of bed, who then claimed I'd moved the bed, the bed had 'shrunk' or it was the dogs fault! ( he was still fast alseep at the time)
Just dozed off , started to dream I was in the zoo..........then I had an elephant sit on my chest! It felt very real! to real!!!! as pain started as well, woke up to find no elephant but at the begining of an angina attack! ( I'd rather have the elephant thanks) did my G.T.N. spray , it reached level 8 , god I thought any higher and I off to the hospital again. Luckly it stopped a few minutes later and didnt need second spray.
But as you know ( if you have angina) the next day ( today) I feel like tommorrow will not come soon enough, have a headache, tired and heart beat a bit off ( Ha! thats putting it mildly) Never mind still alive and kicking .

Re: very low heart rate.
Crumbs you must be somwhere nice and hot to say 'good morning', willdo, quite honestly I'm more likely to get a 'strip o gram' on my 50th birthday then an angiogram in the next year! ( sorry dont mean to be rude or flippent!) Ive just got up , I had to go to bed after the last post as I really was feeling like death again ( headache, stupidly tired, cold sweats) O.K. now. My husband and I are at our wits end , my cardiologist goes on about there not being a link between; chest pain, cold sweats, ghostly palour, blue lips, low heart rate, as well as excessive tiredness, low blood pressure and headaches after an attack. MY G.P. keeps saying its all linked, its strange I was talking to hubby this morning recalling the very first attack I ever had , it was after my daughter was born and I'd had all the illnesess, I was still in hospital having gone to visit my now three week old baby who had been taken into the childrens ward as hubby couldnt cope with her and another child, as I went to use the lift to come back down to my own ward.............pressing the lift button I got a static shock and immediately went into an attack of this terrible chest pain that had me falling to the floor, sweatting, low heart rate, pale etc............today nothings changed except I have other conditions as well.
Still tommorrow is another glorious day and I should feel thankful that I'm still around to see it. Regards, to you hole in the heart.

Re: very low heart rate.
Silly person that l am thought as weather so nice and feeling a bit guilty as had not taken dog for a walk for some time now thought at about 11am yestarday l would take dog ,who has identical heart condition to me, out for a little walk!
'Little' is an understatment guys! got to church and grave yard ( very handy for in years to come having it so near) started feeling a bit tight around the chest, and sweatting rather ,dog panting like a looney, got to field , dog and me panting like a looney's now...............so came back home all of 5 minutes walking !
I had to have a two hour sleep after this ( along with poor dog) as l was sooooooooooo tired you would have thought l had walked a ten k marathon , not 100 yards down our road.
So the moral of this story is; for all of us with 'not so good hearts'
On a very hot day , instead of thinking ' oh! lets take dog for a walk or scrub the kitchen floor or move the furniture around the house , getting a bit of exercise. DONT ! put your feet up inside the house some where cool, not outside as this can cause heat exhaustion even under an umbrella, this will help stop any swelling of ankles, drink plenty of water , this stops dehydration which will give you a massive headache , take things really slowly , things can wait until tommorrow, nothing takes precedent over your health, wait until the cool of the evening before you do anything like walk the dog or do the washing !
Summer has arrived in the U.K. and along with it , swollen ankles, exessive tiredness, heat exhaustion and headaches! roll on winter and some good old fashioned chilblains again!!!!!!!
I still think it has to do with your hole in your heart? you didn't mention what type it was? Also your valves could be giving you the problem. I get terrible chest pain from both of those. I have no blockages but am seeing a specialist for PAD once i am post 6 months from my hole and valve repair. My ankles don't swell to bad but anything above my waist does. Hands, abd, and face are realyy bad. Hope your feeling better. Sue

Re: very low heart rate.
I honestly cant remember what it is, l know its at the back of my heart beacuse when they did the tests l got 'stroppy' on the table and they had to bring me round again. As for my valves apparently l did these after my daughter ( now 21) was born l didnt have them before this ( nothing on my childhood records at all) but when l was ill after her l ran a tempreture of about 106+ god l was soooooooooooo ill .
It really all started from then, sons birth made it worse and now here l am .
Hubby keeps telling me l should print of all your replys and send them to my cardiologist telling him to read them, as l've said my G.P. is pulling her hair out over it , l'm stuck in the middle here, if l could afford private care l think l would have had hole/valves and god knows what else done by now , but as l'm N.H.S. its a case of still 'wait and see' trouble is they dont have to put up with all the pain/tirdness/sweatting/blueness etc and the worry ( not me l'm used to it) it brings to my family . many thanks for reply Ami.

Re: very low heart rate.
Still feeling like blarrrrrrrrr! went to bed at 5.30 pm last night because l was so tired, to tired to be normal ( if you know what l mean) slept until 9.20am this morning and now feel a bit better, but cold! hot sunny day her must be in the 28-30 and l'm cold , my arms are like ice as l have no sleeves on them at the minute so l'm off to get a thick jumper on , do l look silly or what!

Re: very low heart rate.
What a storm last night, it started at 2.am and carried on for 7 1/2 hours of thunder, lightning zapping , dog barking and whinning .
l felt unwell again today, went into town with hubby and felt even worse, nailbeds almost black/blue, feeling sick, head banging and slightly dizzy , had to come home and go to bed from 11.30 amto 3.30 pm , felt better after a sleep.........so tired, strange that as static electricity makes my angina kick in if l touch something and get a shock, so am wondering if all the lightning last night made me feel like this today?
Weather O.K. now , village fete tomorrow ( Saturday) so am skipping ( ha!) along to it for half an hour to see everyone and have a good old natter about 'who, when, what and how' the village is! you know what us women are like when we all get together guys!!!!!!!!
Hope the weathers good in your area , keep smiling and out of the sun, Hole in Heart xxxxxx

Re: very low heart rate.
Village fete ! ha! utter rubbish , sometimes l wonder why they pick someone to run it who has no idea at all what people want, dont know about you but l like to see at a fete; tombola, assorted games for kids, tea /cake stall, jams/pickles/cake stalls , assorted village crafts for sale, things for the kids to ride on, one of those water games ( knock someone into a pool) tug of war, oh , and may be a pets compertition, ..........you know that sort of 'make the community as one type stuff' all we got was a horrid tea stall, ice cream table, and some cheap roll the penny down a hole things! Our village is one of the most expensive to live in ( being by the water) and no one is poor! ( thats an understatement!!!!!) so why put on such a poor show? l know the visitors who drove out to us where not impressed .
Anyhow new boiler being fitted tomorrow ( before winter) as old one dying on us, so house is a bit of a tip at this time, sons bedroom has had to be taken to peices as the boiler is in a built in unit.
Weather her nice, sunny with a bit of a breeze, l'm not to bad today, slept 75% of night! think it is to do with weather and being SO tired all the time.
As l have to loose 53lb in weight ( cardiologist) l've now been on/off diet ,carefully that is, since Jan 2005 and have just weighed in ( this morning) have now lost 35lb since started, am pleased as l now only have 18lb to go in all. l'm trying to get 'back to normal' from having taken a rather nasty drug given to me by the hospital pain clinic , not only did l put on 42lb but l became incontiment! that was horrible.
l have a rather super wedding to go to at the end of August, l bought my outfit, shoes, bag, last christmas! ( such a good price) and l now have something to look forward to , l think that is one thing l miss in my life.................something specail, you know going out for a meal with wine + dancing or going away for the weekend to London to sight see. Its been such a long time since l did anything like that.
Anyhow enough of my ramblelings about what has been................l have to make the most of what today is, dreaming about the past will not get me anywhere today, so l'm off to get son out of his bed ,yes , l know its 10.30am , but he's a typical teenager!
Look after yourselves , hole in heart.

Re: very low heart rate.
Boiler man came yestarday to fit a new one before winter sets in again, silly, silly me l just dont learn.............hubby was at hospital so on my own with 'furry bottomed four legged critter ' here for company, l kept an eye +ear on him from 9am until 3 pm , you know what its like when you have workmen in the house , your never to sure what they are up to.
At 6pm last night l fell down again, dont know what happened !
l've taken the skin off the end of my nose! oh it does look pretty ...........all red and raw.mmmmm lovely!
My feet and ankles looked like a pair of water melons and my normal leg and chest pains took on a new life of there own...........all b****y night!
So today for my sins l'm having to up my water tablets to get it out of my system and thats not funny , why?
Because the plumber has cut the water off!!!!!
l just hope that l dont set my digestion problems off as well now with the extra drugs as it tends to give me the most terrible upset stomach ...............please no , anything but that, not with the water off and no loo's available!!!!!! give me any other punishment for not resting , but not that one.
Well l'm off again now , need to have some lunch as its coming up to 12.30 pm in uk now, look after yourselves, dont do any silly things like me, rest, rest , and more rest in the hot weather guys lots of love holeinheart + very red sore nosed one!!!

Re: very low heart rate.
Nose now peeling at the tip , very pretty , a bit like old wallpaper when it won't stick anymore! l managed to get rid of 5lb of water, shame it cant be recycled as we are being told we may have a water shortage soon.
Its been raining like mad here so l havent been able to do much or go out, which does make nonsense of my last line , but thats the british water board for you!
Heart has been behaving well since the waether has cooled down, l really dont like this very hot stuff, l know that its summer and everyone expects it to be nice but 27-30 degees , no way, l feel like a prisoner in my house when it gets that high.
Tried to do some 'hoovering' today as hubby has popped out to town , my son is here with me so l thought ,hell its been ages l think l will have a quick nip about!
Two minutes into the lounge carpet and l'm as sweaty as a 40 mile marathon runner and looking like l've just climbed mount everest ! legs going from under me, head swimming and being told by son who came to see what the noise was ' stupid b****y woman ..........will you ever learn!'
probably not ! ............but my bit of the carpet does look nice!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: very low heart rate.
Its crazy , that two minute hoovering has had me feeling like 'death warmed up ' all weekend! Blood pressure up and down like a jack in the box, headaches that make me want to be sick and l look like l've seen a ghost..........no ...........l look like a ghost ( hubbys words)
Saturday night my hips/legs/ankles & feet went mad with pain and l spent the night merrily rolling about the bed in an effort to try and find a position that was comfortable so that l might have an hours sleep , after 9 hours of rolling around l decided l was never going to be comfortable or sleep so just gave up and watched telly in bed feeling absolutley shattered again! I find it so frustrating that with all my pain control l still cannot get a nights sleep, yet if my hubby took even a 1/3 rd of what l took he would be out cold for days!
So Sunday was another really great day for me, headaches, excessive tiredness and still looking like a ghost , l feel its about time l traded my body in for a new one and let someone else have a turn at being an 'odd ball' for a change. holeinheart
My curbside diagnosis would be Heart Failure with a very poor ejection fraction. I would guess that your only cure begins with heart surgery to replace the hole...presumably between 2 heart chambers and to give you a couple artificial valves. What you must weigh is the risk of death from the surgery versus the quality of life you have now. A heady decicision that must consider the risk of making things worse, the chance of unnecessary surgery with no improvement, the quality of coronary care available to you, the extreme cost, a tedious rehabilitation, how bad your current state really is and even your age.
Your doctor's avoiding doing the testing to ascertain what is really going on hints at more than a little dishonesty, perhaps he knows more than he's saying.
An "ejection fraction" will tell a lot.

Re: very low heart rate.
Hi, Lenin,
l to have always felt that they keep a bit back from me! when l did the exercise test a year ago now , l had the infusion to speed up my heart because my hips /legs wouldnt take the treadmill becuase of my R.A.
Anyhow , they started to inject the stuff and l got chest pain, went scarlet then grey , the blood pressure machine alarms went of and l started to pass out ( mmm......nice) they had to stop and pump in the heart rate lowing drug before the end of the test . Everyone who had been in before me had come walking out , had a cup of coffee and a biscuit , had a specail x-ray then gone home.
I wasnt allowed off the hospital trolley, has given about six cups of coffee with a nurse sitting with me all the time ( everyone was staring at me as they passed?) l had my x-ray and still wasnt allowed to leave until a doctor had checked me over again and l had another E.C.G.
when l asked what the results where why said not to worry , its O.K. and wouldnt say anymore to me.
Hubby came to pick me up....................his face was a picture............he came over to me and stood opened mouthed looking at me? He said l was so white he had never seen anyone look so ill in his life, l had no lip colour , no colour at all, he wouldnt take me home until he had been asurred l was 100% alright.
I was tired, slow, and cold for about a week after that and kept getting 'shots across the bow'...........my name for a fast heavy, painful central chest pain which leaves me pale and dizzy.
Many years ago l went through a very bad 6 months of this pain, my G.P. who lived just down the road from me was adament that l had 'pericarditis' as he had witnessed this sort of symptons many times before , yet my heart consultant just ignored him!
So , still alive, still having the b****y chest pains like a huge hairy gorilla hugging me then sitting on my chest , still going a 'lighter shade of pale' and running a 40k marathon while laying in bed sweating so much l stick to the sheets.
If l 'behave' and rest , things are not to bad, but having said that l can and have had attacks 'out of the blue' that flatten me , when l've done nothing to 'deserve it'
Thanks for talking to me, as you may have gathered from my other posts , l always try to look on the funny side of life and not be depressing to read , too many people who are ill / disabled just talk about the pain and the inability to do things , yes it is painful and frustrating to be like this but.............l'm still here and able to enjoy my life ,quiet as it is now, l can watch my children grow, read stories to my grandchildren and cuddle my loopy dog ,as long as l can do this , the pain and disabilitys l have 'just fade into insignificance '( well thats what l tell everyone , and l'm sticking to it!!!!)

Re: very low heart rate.
Me thinks my blood pressure is playing up today ( for a change)
Floor seems to be moving about while l'm still , l cant seem to stand straight at all , l have to keep moving sideways? very strange and some what disconcerting.
Running buckets here, havent had a shower yet as hubby in town with son , so just typing away at this site and my other 'more lunatic site' in order to keep safe and still. l know l havent over done the medications as l've checked , twice. Might be the heat? or just ticker is low at the minute.......ah ! have a cup of coffee and a biscuit ( ice gem for the dog) that will do it ............and as long as l dont 'kiss the floor' in the kitchen l will put the bread machine on..............hey, l'm not going to be ruled by my stupid body playing up again, if l sat and did nothing when it wasnt working 100% l would spend all of my days stuck to the settee or in bed.........well stuff that..........l'm not 90 yet ( sorry all you 90 years old , didnt mean to be rude)
Love , a very slightly feeling drunk holeinheart .

Re: very low heart rate.
Oh ! dear, dear , dear.
It wasnt my blood pressure.............it wasnt my heart.............or any of my other little bits.
Some nasty critter virus got at me. l have just spent from 6.30 pm until 2 am dragging myself back and forth........back and forth.......over and over again to the bathroom with contractions that brought back memories of childbirth, nappies and the gurguling of baby's .
Dog in her infinite wisdom thought l was playing some silly game every time l needed the bathroom , so joined in with wonderful antic's of running up and down the hall in front of me jumping about , barking , and rolling across the floor paddling her legs in the air ...........you try getting a mad dog out of the bathroom with your knees and thighs pressed together while having a contraction and sweating like a marathon runner......its not funny!
Having taken four of my anti spasm drugs now l have calmed down a bit but my bottom has the distinct feeling that someone has taken a cheese grater to it .........cushion please!
Hubby has also been in the wars! he cut the top of his hand off some years ago ( across base of thumb) and now has a pedicul flap on it ( taken from upper thigh) silly man messing about with cement yestarday afternoon got some onto it..........he's now burnt the stump!
So here we both are ; me sitting twanging away still, cant eat, starving hungry , with a rather sore bottom ,cheese sandwich dear!
Hubby sitting watching his stump , if it turns white then its off to A & E for us ( he did this once before and nearly lost it , four weeks in hospital)
England is wonderfully sunny today , water on river glistening with little boats bobbing up and down on it , light breeze fluttering the green leaves of the trees, birds softley singing , the hum of children playing games in the garden driftd our way ,B.B.Q.'s soon sizzerling ............. Ah! heaven............
But hubby and l are stuck inside becuase of hand and virus problems.........just one thing l have to say.....................
So which one of you sent me this b****y virus then .............come on own up ...........!
( no offence meant guys! just ravings of a half straved, sore bottomed woman , bored out of her mind, guts twanging away , stuck in her house with a raving lunatic hubby and a mad furry bottomed critter...............save me someone, save me!!!)

Re: very low heart rate.
Virus now moved on to another unsuspecting person so feeling much better today, hubbys hand didnt blow up ...............visions of it catapulting across the room then with him chasing it! but it is a lovely shade of red with dark brown patches and still extremely sore.
Ticker behaving at the minute (touch wood) but l have been getting rather a lot of shafts of bright spearing light shooting away when l lay down at night, l have never suffered from migraines in the past 50 years so l think its not that, might just be the heat, or my stupid blood pressure.
When l had some tests done at the National Hospital in Queens Sqaure and local hospital they found that if l stood still for more than a couple of minutes my blood pressure dropped rather alarmingly! so may be now l'm getting it as well laying down,
Well due for a check up soon and a look at my drugs again ( change around my painkillers as l get used to them quickly) so will bring it up then, thats if it doesnt suddenly go silly on me in the meantime .
Well l'm off now, going to do a bit of writting of the book while my two fingers are behaving .Holeinheart.
