Slight cracking in the coating would not be a problem as many pills can be divided in half for 1/2 dosage. However, there are a few pills that should be taken whole as splitting, crushing, or chewing destroys the long action and it may increase side effects.

A cracking of the coat wouldn't be a problem, but the cause of cracking maybe an issue, ie exposure to sunlight, age, etc. If the medication has not had proper care, it my lose some of the effectiveness.
