Heart Rate Spikes

I'm a 21 yr old Female. When I'm walking up stairs, my heart rate spikes! I don't hold my breath, I've even made sure I walk up stairs while doing deep breathing. At the gym, my heart rate starts out at 129. Then it easily goes up to 173 at a jog on the crosstrainer/elliptical. I've tried slowing my breathing, but it doesn't move my heart rate down. I feel like something is wrong with me when a guy my own age is running on the cross trainer at 8 mph with a heart rate of like 150, and I'm going 5.7 mph and my ehart rate is 173, and I'm only on level 3!!!!! it goes up to level 20!!! Is something wrong with me?

Re: Heart Rate Spikes

When you climb the stairs you're exerting energy so it's normal for your HR to spike, in spite of breathing properly. Your exercise HR has a lot to do with conditioning. If you're really concerned go see a cardiologist and get a treadmill stress test. It's more than likely you have nothing to worry about. Going to caridologist will give you piece of mind.

BTW - I never take my heart rate. Focusing on my HR causes anxiety which causes my HR to increase which causes more anxiety. Out of sight, out of mind...
