really scared

Hi all,
Monday I went to my doctor and she did an EKG. It showed that I have a few irregular heartbeats or extra heartbeats. She said most likely that it is just anxiety, but she wants to do a 24 holter monitor this coming Monday. I guess my question is do any of you think I have anything to worry about? The reason why I went to the doctor back in February when on my symptoms started was because I was having palpitations. They are not all the time just once in awhile and not severe, just scares me when they happen. I do not get out of breath, but sometimes my heart just starts racing for no apparent reason. I usually take my pulse and it never seems to go over 98 bpm when that happens. My doctor also said I have white coat hypertension because at the office it always seems to run 150/100-142/82, but at home I always get readings of 110/70-118/75. I guess I am pretty worried also because heart disease does run in my family. In fact, my father had to have bypass surgery 3 years ago. Oh, back if February my doctor did do a complete exam including blood work and my tests all came back great. No diabetes, no high cholesterol, or any of that. I am 33 years old and in pretty good shape. I weigh 139, and excercise for an hour everyday. Although I do not eat always the best. Another thing that scares me is when I was in my early twenties I had a doctor tell me my cholesterol was really high for my age, I do not remember my exact numbers back then, but being young and stupid I did not really do anything about it for a year or two. Do you think that could be causing me problems today? I am sorry for the long post but as you can probably tell I am really worried. I guess I don't know what could be causing the irregular heartbeats? Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Re: really scared

Almost everyone occasionally has an extra heartbeat on a regular basis. The echo tech stated that during my test.

It may help to compare your home BP test at the same time as your doctor's test. Based on what you have said I would think the high probability of a problem is anxiety, but with your family history of heart problems (bypass due to blockage) it would be a good idea to monitor and keep your cholesterol as low as possible as well as proper diet and exercise.

Re: really scared

Thanks for your reply. It does help knowing that for once in for all my doctor is getting to the bottom of it. I have been dealing with this for months now. First, they thought it was just anxiety and I kept telling them the Xanax was not working and I was still getting the racing heart. I see the doctor this Thursday for the results. They said if it was anything serious they would call and get me in sooner. I have relaxed a lot since I wrote that first post. I know I can only be making my symptoms worse by being so upset. Besides I really truely believe that if it was something really serious that after the ekg they would have either sent me to the er or straight to a cardiologist. Thanks again!!

Re: really scared

My father had an irregular heartbeat his whole life and died at 90; from a stroke. He never had heart surgery of any kind. Or anxiety.
Stay away from all caffeine.
