High dose folic acid + heart - Heart Disorders Message Board

I was put on foltx for a slightly elevated homocystine
level.
2.5 mgs- folic acid
25 mgs. B-6
2 mgs---B-12

I was reading all this research that the high dose of folic acid was exellant for heart health and even cardiologists were putting their heart patients on it after heart attacks that they proved that it can prevent reinstenoses. Now I just read a post that they are no longer concerned about your homoscytine level and the high dose of folic acid can in fact cause heart attacks and strokes.

Anyone know anything about this? I do not know if I should stop the foltx or not.

I would be interested to learn where you read about the detrimental effects of folic acid. I have taken high doses (15mg/daily) for years, because of atherosclerosis. I take vit. B 6 and B12 for the same reason. A consultant kidney specialist first prescribed these for me because of renal artery stenosis.Obviouly I would be interested in any information concerning folic acid as I take a high dose and have done so for 5-6 years.

I read this on a chf forum, it is not moderated but it was a post and a few replies that agreed. It has me concerned I called a friend that was just at her cardio and her and her DR. both take foltx. you certainly would think the cardio would have said something, in fact he gave her a script for a generic for Foltx.

I get yearly echo"s done and had a mild aortic stenoses that has now been termed borderline also have mild carotid blockage that the numbers have improved on, so I was thinking this was from the folic acid.

I could not find any thing updated on the pc about this.

I hope I did not upset you, I cerainly did not mean to. I have been taking foltx for about 5 years.

No you did not upset me. I was naturally interested as people have remarked on the high dose I take.I have a stent in my left carotid artery, so I do everything possible to repair the damage done to my arteries, mainly caused by heavy smoking for 30 years or so.I have reason to believe (kidney function tests) that sticking to a low saturated fat diet, exercising, and the folic acid + vit. B6 & 12 have improved my widespread atherosclerosis. The present evidence goes with folic acid,but it is a good idea to follow up on recent research in any case. Good luck and thanks for your reply.

I asked my DR. about the folic acid, she has not heard anything negative about this and also did not seem to believe it as se said all these vits are water soluble.
