Heart Murmur Concerns

I was recently diagnosed with a heart murmur at a recent routine doctor's visit. I am a 23 year old female and I have always been in good health. However, over the past 10-12 years I have fainted several times and I go through phases when I am really dizzy, weak, and feel light-headed. My doctor said I have a wide S-2 with syncope and he sent me to get an echocardiogram. I had that this week and now my doctor has asked me to come back to discuss the results with me. I am nervous about what could cause a wide S2 heart murmur and how it will affect me in the future. Does anyone know anything about these?

Re: Heart Murmur Concerns

Best thing to do is to wait it out and get back with the doctor to discuss results. You should try to relax, if it was major, he would have had you in sooner. Heart murmur vary in degree, from mild to major. If you do not know what a heart murmur is, here is some info. It is the disease that closes off a valve and causes the heart to work harder. You may have had this a long time, but never diagnosed till now. Be thankful that it has been caught and treatment is available. Mine was genetic and four years ago was replaced. Not every person gets it replaced. So do not fret, just get back with the doctor and find out what the condition is and what can be done. Good luck and keep in touch here.

Re: Heart Murmur Concerns

The murmur is the sound of blood going backwards through the leaky valve. Many murmurs are benign and need no treatment. So, as suggested, don't go off the deep end with worry. Yet that doctor visit can be stressful, so do yourself two favors. Bring someone with you. Until then, as you think of questions, write them down so you don't forget them. Take the list in with you.

Let us know how the doctor visit goes.

Re: Heart Murmur Concerns

It turns out I have mitral valve prolapse with moderate regurgitation. I am glad it is nothing very serious. Now that I know what the problem is and have been doing some research on the subject, it really helps explain a lot of random symptons I've had over the past 10 years or so: fainting, dizziness, palpitations, strange feelings in my chest, etc.
