Well first of all, of course remember that everyone reacts to meds differently. Obviously you know that... but just keep it in mind. Toprol may be terrific for you - you won't know til you try. This is my experience.
Last summer I went to the ER with an episode of SVT. After they converted me, they gave me Lopressor (the non-time release version of metoprolol; Toprol is time-release metoprolol) through my IV, and Toprol tablets to take daily at home.
After they gave me the Lopressor, I noticed that my voice got really hoarse and my chest was tight and it became somewhat hard to breathe. I just assumed it was a result of having been in SVT for so long and brushed it off. However, when I took a Toprol tablet the next day, I had the same symptoms- a laryngitis-like hoarseness and chest tightness. Each time I took the tablet I'd get these symptoms, which would disappear about an hour after taking the meds. So, I quit taking it.
For me, the symptoms weren't scary or severe, but the chest tightness was annoying, so I didn't want to take it anymore.
