hi, i am a 31yo male, slighltly high bp which im on toprol xl 50mg, and lipids are : choles 208, hdl 55, ldl 125, tri's 142. i have either mvp or mitral regurgatation ( dr really not sure) but i have been getting sharp chest pain on my left side and some pressure in my chest. i have had these sypmtoms earlier in the year and they went a way and now there back. are these symptoms common with mitral valve probelms? i had a regular stess test which was normal

Hi niki,

If regurgitation is moderate to serious it will compromise cardiac output. With diminished blood supply (portion goes back into the atrium instead of system circulation), there could be angina (pain) caused by ischemia (lack of blood to the heart). Also shortness of breath usually occurs because the heart has to work harder to pump the same amount of blood.

MVP (mitral valve prolapse) is an underlying cause of the regurgitation. Pressure prevents the leaflets from properly closing and/or the chorda tendnea (hinge to the leaflet) may be elongated and/or damaged.

Many people with mvp do not require treatment nor have any symptoms. Others may require surgery.
