Irregualar heart beat..too young?

Hi, I am 23 years old and I recently went to the doctor and for some reason I was pretty anxious durring this time she listened to my heart and told me that I had a slight irregular heart beat.

She didnt say anything else. It was like nothing was wrong.

I kind of knew I had these for a while, I get them when I am nervous or thinking about somthing that freaks me out.

Im really kind of scared! Am I going to die? Is this going to shorten my life? Should the doctor have been more worried?
Is there anything I can do to stop them?
Is 23 too young for these to be happening?

this is somthing new I can stress about! Please help

Hi Rayvin,

Calm down. I am not saying that 23 is too young to have anything wrong with your heart, but your age is certainly a notch in your favor.....wouldnt you think? Then, your doctor wasnt worried.....do you trust his/her judgement? Did you ask questions? Call back and tell him/her that you are concerned and would like him to refer you to a good heart specialist. No, you arent going to die.....you may have something very minor thats causing your irregular heartbeat. I have a friend who is my age that has had one for years...(doctor tells her this, but she doesnt seem concerned enough to want to know WHY)....if it were ME in your place or hers,I would follow up to find out WHY. BUT, even then its probably nothing to worry about. Calm down...your too young to be worried about all this.

Re: Irregualar heart beat..too young?

It totally depends on what your exact diagnosis is. "Irregular heartbeat" doesn't mean much. Some heartbeat irregularities are totally harmless and some are not. Did your doctor give you any more detailed information? If not you could call and ask.

Chances are you're going to be totally fine, especially if your doctor didn't seem concerned or send you for further testing. If she thought you were in danger she would've sent you to a cardiologist immediately.

Rayvin,

Sorry to hear that you are having irregular heart beats. I get them too from time to time and they can be quite scary.

Just from your post it sounds to me like your problem could be anxiety related. I would call your doctor back and tell him/her that you notice your heart beat feeling "off" when you are nervous. He may prescribe medicine or at least tell you what you can do keep your heart rate calm and regular. I know magnesium can help with heart arrhythmias so I consider taking it as a supplement, but talk to your doctor first.

I'm not expert, but just from my personal experience the following things have helped me:

1. Drink plenty of water and drink it in place of too many sugary and caffeinated beverages.

2. Eat healthy--whole grain breads and pasta, brown rice, fresh fruits and veggies, lean meats, low-fat dairy products, and sweets sparingly. (I can't live without a little bit of chocolate each day ).

3. Exercise regularly. A daily 30 minute walk or maybe moderate to intense cardio exercise 3-4 times a week. But always check with your doctor first to see what is the appropriate amount of exercise for you.

Good luck!

Re: Irregualar heart beat..too young?

Rayvin,

I was diagnosed with SVTs which is a funny word for super fast irregular heartbeats when I was 19 and actually I probably had them a few year prior to then, but went to a doctor at 19. Been on meds ever since and 17 years later I am still here and have no heart damage or heart attacks. You'll be okay.
