Heart rate back up, on beta blocker - Heart Disorders Message Board

I was put on 25mg of Toprol for sinus tac. For quite awhile my heart rate has been staying in the 70's and 80's range now its back in the upper 90's range.
Is this normal even being on a beta blocker?
I have been sick with some chest congestion, can that elevate heart rate?

You mentioned that you have chest congestion. Do you cough when you are trying to take your pulse? Coughing can cause your bpm to go up. It certainly does with mine.

If you are concerned, give yourself peace of mind and call your doctor, tell him whats happening and make certain this is normal and if not thenhe can take additional steps to bring your pulse back down to normal range.Good luck.

Quite possibly, whatever has caused your chest congestion, has also caused an incease in neuro-hormonal activity, exceeding what your beta blocker is able to control.

It is not normal to go from the usual HR to quickly go to a higher rate for a period of time. YES, congestion can cause the heart rate to go up. Congestion interfers with the oxygen/carbon dioxide exchange in the lungs, and the heart beats faster to compensate to meet the oxygen demand. You may also feel tired or fatigue easily as well.
