Racing Heartbeat - Heart Disorders Message Board

My son's girlfriend has been having problems with her heart racing. She is 17 years old and a little overweight. About 2 wks ago, her heart was racing while she was a school. She went to the school nurse several times but each time it would stop before the nurse could find anything. That night, her mom took her to the emergency room. While I was there with her, her heart rate would go from 67-68 to 80-81 suddenly. It did that several times while I was there. When my son got there I left because only 2 people were allowed in there with her. He said that at one point her heart rate suddenly jumped to over 100. The doctors said the only thing they found was that she had a bladder infection that they found in her urine test. The x-rays and EKG were OK. They advised her to see her family doctor about a heart monitor.
My son is really worried about her because it keeps happening. She is staying off of caffeine. I don't know what she eats at home but when she is with us, she doesn't eat a lot.
If anyone has any ideas, I would appreciate it.

She should stay away from all caffeine as she is doing. She does need to see her doctor who most likely will make her wear a holter monitor. If that shows nothing than perhaps she should see a specialist, cardiologist and get completely checked out. Has anyone mentioned that anxiety can trigger these episodes? Is she anxious and or have panic attack? Good luck and keep us posted.

Going from 67-68 to 80-81 isn't in itself unusual, and both of those are normal resting heart rates. Over 100 while being nervous and in the emergency room isn't unusual either. Was her heart really racing any of these times? A person's heart rate can change at any given time, and nothing you said sounded like anything serious or even like racing at all. Am I missing something?

I'm not saying that it's nothing, but it could be anxiety. I do the same thing with a lot of stress. But, I would make an appointment with a cardiologist just to make sure. Once they rule out anything serious, maybe if it is anxiety that will help her to calm down a bit.

Her heart isn't racing if it's below 100 or even a little above 100. She's probably just paying more attention to it, or is suffering from anxiety.
