Mitral Valve Prolapse

Hi all,

For the last 18 months or so I have been experiencing heart palpitatations (quickened heart beat), fatigue, low exercise tolerence (in which I get dizzy, tired and listless very quickly after beginning the workout. Also my heart rate shoots up and doesn't come down easily) and general anxiety attacks. I also have some mild gastritis in my stomach that churns and burns unless I get my stomach full.

When all of this started I went to go see a cardiologist and they said I have a slight mitral valve prolapse which many people have and they are not the cause of my palpitations.

Do you think that the MVP is a possible cause for what I am experiencing? Should I call my cardiologist and tell them my symptoms and ask if the MVP is a possible cause?

Thanks all

Re: Mitral Valve Prolapse

Hi,
Sorry for your discomfort. The internet has many great pages on MVP. Look, read and make yourself aware. I was DX at 18 or 19. I am 43 now. My MVP has never caused me any concern. IF I am more tired or fatigued after exercising or exertion it is a "norm" for me and has always been that way.
When I was younger it seemed that when I had a cold or any kind of infection in my body I would have chest discomfort, but havent noticed that in the last decade or so.
In a nutshell......I wouldnt be overly concerned with a slight case of MVP. It shouldnt cause you any problems. You can get anxiety from worrying about it, so try not too. It hasnt killed ME yet!!

Oh, I also have palps.....maybe the MVP makes me more aware of them. I have always had them.

Re: Mitral Valve Prolapse

Hi Frodoh,

For a perspective, MVP does not properly close and some blood that should go into circulation back flows into the receiving chamber.

Consequently, at times when there is a heavy demand for blood/oxygen there is compensation to provide a supply to meet the demand. The heart beats faster, less blood to the muscles (fatigue) so as to provide a sufficient supply to the heart, brain, etc.. There can be degistive problems as well. Worst case scenario.

I have moderatre leakage and experience the symptoms describe...not palpitations. However, compensation for a faster heart beat could trigger palpitations. You should contact your cardiologist regarding the symptoms you describe.
