Post How do I know if I got a heart condition? MVP?

How quick a person can develop this condition?

I am just curious if anyone here has mitral valve prolapse and what symptoms do you have ?

My heart has been acting weird lately, I'd say during my entire life (26 yo) maybe I have had not more than 5-10 skipped beats but in last few months I had quite a few skipped beats. It doesn't repeat itself, only once a day when it happens. It usually happens once or twice a week. I had an active running and exerising program but I've quit exercising since last winter and these skipped beats made me anxious about my heart and I started my exercise program again, so far so good, since I started a week ago, I didn't get any skipped beats yet.

I also feel a discomfort, actually feels like a slight muscle pain, an inch below my left collar bone sometimes, does that have anything to do with the heart or could it be a muscle issue because I started doing push-ups too. I am asking this because why would I get a heart pain close to the upper chest? Isn't the heart a little bit lower? I am skinny person and when I hold my breath, tuck my stomach in and look down I can slightly see my heart beating right below my chest bone. I hope I don't have an enlarged heart.

About 3 months ago, I had a general exam for immgration service, where my GP listened to my chest from front and back with a stethoscope. He didn't tell me anything about my heart, no murmur or clicks and I didn't ask. I thought he would have told me if I had something. Could I be developing something right now or am I just worrying?

Thanks...

John,

You'd be surprised how often a doctor will hear something on your heart and just assume that you know that it's there (especially someone who is not your PCP-- like a doc performing a physical)... OR how often something like MVP is overlooked... The 'clicking' that a heart makes w/ MVP can be very hard to hear, but can usually be discovered w/ an EKG.
I would cut out any stimulants (including Caffeine) and see your doctor about it...

Hello superwoman,

Thanks for the reply,

Do you suggest that my GP might have overlooked a condition? Now I am more worried...

I disagree with "The 'clicking' that a heart makes w/ MVP can be very hard to hear, but can usually be discovered w/ an EKG". I just saw my doctor yesterday and he stated the MVP does not show up on an EKG, however it will show up on an Echocardiogram (sp). Just thought I would add that.

Busnmaster,

It sounds to me like you don't have anything to worry about. Occasional skipping is part of MANY people's lives and usually signifies nothing.
Try a magnesium supplement daily (250-500mg of magnesium oxide works and is cheap.) That might clear up the occasional beat irregularities- it often does.
