racing heart;nausea, anyone else experienced? - Heart Disorders Message Board

Three years ago i woke up one morning and experienced really bad nausea. I thought it would pass but 1 week late rwhen it didn't i went to my doctor who said my heart rate had increases to over 1 hundred bpm. I have had this every day since then and it interferes with my normal day to day activities. I am taking Beta Blockers to slow the heart down but they were only supposed to be a short term meausre, but now every time i try to comeoff them i get an adrenaline rush, which makes me feel shaky. I was wondering if anyone else has experience dthis and if anyone knows of a way i can control it or a long term solution?

You might want to talk to your dr about trying an anxiety medicine. I also started having a fast heartbeat along with other symptoms several weeks ago. My heartrate went from being in the 70's to over 100 on a daily basis. My dr started me on toprol (which is a beta blocker) at first. That didn't seem to help me much. Now, I'm taking a low dose of valium a couple times a day and I feel a lot better.

Have you had your thyroid checked??? Im doctoring for the same thing(my heart races to averages of 115) I am going to see an internal med. doc later this week. Just a suggestion, hope you get everything figured out!!

Hilery has a very interesting point.

Beta-blockers suppress the autonomic symptoms of anxiety, including gastrointestinal disturbance, palpitations and tremor, but have no effect on the psychological symptoms such as worry, tension and fear.

They are therefore indicated for patients with predominantly physical rather than psychological symptoms.

So if indeed your symptoms are psychological, no wonder when you come off the beta blocker, your "rush" returns.

Talk to your physician about anti-anxiety medication instead, which ideally of course doesn't have to be long term if one deals with the underlying cause of the anxiety. Have you thought of seeing a therapist?

This is not necessarily true with Toprol XL. It can cause gastrointestinal disturbance. In the 9 months that I have been on it, I can hear my stomach gurgle more often & have lost 9 pounds in the process. It is listed as one of the side-effects, but I have seen many others post that it causes stomach problems+. I am on Lotrel 5/20 as well, so I wonder if the combo is too much for my system to take. My doc. says that the side-effects are in my head.... yeah right.
