My sister was diagnosed with periparum cardiomyopathy after she gave birth to my niece a year ago. She responded well to the meds and did not go back to the cardiologist for her 6 month check-up (they lost their helth insurance for several months). Now, a year later, she is in congestive heart failure again. Does anyone have experience with this condition?

I don't have experience with that particular cardiomyopathy (there is more than one cause of cardiomyopathy) but my husband was diagnosed with myocardiopathy (virus attacked the heart muscle) and congestive heart failure. His cardiologist explained that CHF is like a runny nose in that it is a symptom of underlying problem--i.e. runny nose can be due to cold, allergy or something else. My husband's congestive heart failure is due to cardiomyopathy just as your sister's CHF is due to cardiomyopathy. Your sister needs to follow her cardiologist's instructions and to have regular checkups--insurance or no insurance. These conditions are serious..

I am surprised that noone else has experience with this particular type of cardiomyopathy. Basically, it is CHF cause by pregnancy. It only happens in about 1 in 10,000 pregnancys. It usually occurs in the last month of pregnancy or in the month following delivery. In my sisters case, she was diagnosed 3 days after giving birth. She can never have another baby, it would kill her. She is only 32 years old.

Any additional information would be appreciated!
