Post Sharp pains and pounding heart

Hi Folks,

I am 44 and quite fit, non-smoker.
I have had a dull ache behind my sternum for over 3 years, which my doctors put down to skeletal problems.
Took the Ibroprofen with limited results.

Recently however, I have started to have sharp chest pains centrally and right side of neck. I have also started to have a weird pounding chest sensation, not just sometimes but 24/7.
All this is when at rest, on exertion still the same, sharp pains every so ofter, but constant heart pounding

Had an ecg which was clear, chest xray okay, doctor thinks I am exaggerating i'm sure, as he barely noted my pains and pounding.

I don't quite know what to do next as I feel quite helpless at the moment.

I would welcome any advice from anyone with similar experiences

Mike:
The ekg (ecg) and x-ray are not always the best tests to detect problems with the heart. Did your doctor listen to your heart, and if so, did he detect a murmur? If the pain/discomfort and "throbbing" in the neck continue, request an echo. Just speculation, but the throbbing in the neck sounds like the aortic valve might be misbehaving and this may not be picked up by an ekg (or x-ray). Keep at the doctor (or change to another) until you get some answers.

Oops, I just saw you said you were experiencing "pounding" in the chest, not throbbing in the neck! This changes things a little bit, but I think an echo would still be in order. The pounding actually sounds more like palpitations - in which case, a Holter monitor might identify their source and severity. Sorry for not reading your post more carefully!
