Hi.....for the past 7 months Since i was diagnosed with severe anxiety and panic disorder..and graves disease(hyperthyroidism) My heart has done some weird things.Ive had tons of EKG's and 24 hour Holter monitoring. They have found nothing wrong. But I have heart palpitations. My doc says its because my anxiety but I get paniky when my heart does something funny like skip a beat.IM determined its not my anxiety. has anyone had anything similiar to this??
This could easily be anxiety and the more you worry the worse it will get. Have you seen a cardiologist or has your GP had these tests? To help yourself feel more at ease with this diagnosis, get the opinion of a cardiologist if you have not seen one. If you have, ask about having a stress test done which will show a lot more than the ekg and halter monitor does. I have heart and lung problems and when I am not comfortable with the diagnosis of one doctor, I am not afraid to ask another for their opinion. It will tell you if something has been missed or if you are having anxiety only.
I suggest seeing a cardiologist and have some more testing, such as a stress test, etc.. You must first rule out the heart problems.
You say you have hyperthyroidism and among the symptoms for hyperthyroidism is anxiety/panic. If you are being medicated properly then the anxiety/panic should be under control. I suggest getting a thyroid blood test to find out whatís going on there. (Check out the thyroid board).
You also said you were diagnosed with severe anxiety and panic disorder. This may be caused by the thyroid problem, but if it isnít there are medications that can help you. Good luck!
Keep moving, it makes it harder for the undertaker to catch you. Don
You should also have an echocardiogram, if you feel you may have a problem with the actual structure of your heart. It will reveal structural abnormalities, and make you feel better knowing it was done.
i have the heart palpatations also. Lots of skipped beats. Ive been checked out and my heart is fine except for the skips. I also have anxiety panic attacks and it definately can cause the heart to beat funny. so many many people have palpitations and tho it is scary it is not life threatning. hope this helps and gives you some peace of mind. i know how scary they can be. take care
Both anxiety and palipitations are known and quite common symptoms of hyperthyroidism. And of course, palipatations can lead to anxiety, and anxiety can lead to palipatations - got that?
Of course, there could always be other causes. But, i would do some reading on the Thyroid section of this website. There are some very knowledgable people there, many of which are going through the same thing at this moment, and would be happy to talk with you.
You might notice, that section is more focused on Hypo than Hyper, but still, lot's of knowledge there.
My opinions only, not medical advice. Always follow advice of your Doctor, not what I say here.
My sister-n-law was feeling the same way as you. She was having a hard time sleeping at night because her heart was beating so rapidly. She said it felt as if it was going to pound out of her chest. She went to the Dr. and was diagnosed with Graves disease, just as you were. The Dr. said that this was a very normal symptom of hyperthyroidism and Graves Disease.
I hope this information helps you feel a little at ease.
P.S. Just one more little bit of information for ya: When I was having anxiety attacks I was getting the same exact feeling. I even went to the ER because I thought I was having a heart attack. It turned out to just be anxiety. So, if you are hyperthyroid and having anxiety, the heart palpitations you are feeling just may be because of that.

The one thing i suffer from the most with havig anxiety is heart palpitations and arrythmias(skipping beats) If you were to go to the doc id say do it just for your own peace of mind but I doubt your gonna need a stress test etc if the doc found it to be serious he would have told you so.
I have had some of the problems that are in this post among others. I know I have a problem with stress and anxiety. I went to a specialist to be checked out. He could not find anything physically wrong with me. Once he convinced me my problem was stress, the symptoms got much better. I was just worrying to much.
