Unhappy Im on beta blockers and im so frightened

Ive recenly changed my doctor as he wasnt interested in my panic attacks. The one im with now is totally amazing and very interested in whats going on. Well i went to see him today and we talked for ages about how my palps make me panic as im scared i have a bad heart. He decided to try me on a very mild beta blocker called Propanalol 10mg, the lowest strength you can get and im to take it 3 times a day for a month before going back for a check up. The thing is, im terrified of taking something that messes with your heart and i told him this. He assured me that the only time it will ever slow the heart is when its raised through panic and no other time. As soon as i got home i had a big panic attack just thinking about it. What i really want to know is, is anyone else on beta blockers and how do you find them? Just reading the side effects sends me into panic!

Tracey,
Please DO NOT worry about beta blockers! I have been taking 50 mg/day for several years and now take 125 mg. daily. (I have an enlarged ventricle). People with high blood pressure also take beta blockers. They are a wonderful drug. Without getting too technical, they basically work on the beta receptors somehow and give your heart a nice smooth rhythm. Ask your doctor to give you information. They will not damage your heart, only help it...take care

I was in the same boat as you! I started having skip beats and stuff and would just freak out , thought i was going to die and the docto did all sorts of test and also mentioned the blockers, I'm like you thought I was to afarid to take them and never did, just the thought of taking them sent me into a panic attack, Now my skip beats are pretty much gone without even taking any meds. Good luck and if you dont wanna take something, Don't!!!!!

Ive wasted 10 years of my life where as i should be out with friends enjoying myself. I spent my 21st birthday in bed. I keep reading the side effect about heart failure and fainting and im so pettrified. My sister is on the same tablets as me but she's taking 80mg and she finds them ok. This is not heart failure. Beta blockers give added protection to the heart. They may make you tired and light headed at first, but I would guess you are probably on a low dose. You really need to get your anxiety under control or it could lead to major health problems.

Tracey, don't worry about the beta blocker. I'm taking beta blocker for many years now and it does help my heart rhythm, which was always too fast before. And don't read the "side effects." I don't care what pill it is, the side effects are always "scary." Even a simple pill like a baby aspirin. The only side effect you may notice that you feel a little tired but you will adjust to the pill after a few months. When I first started on the beta blocker I almost stopped it because I felt soo tired, but after about 3 months I was back to my "frisky" self again.

Tracey:
Hi. I'm Jerry. You can read many of my posts on the high blood pressure board and the panic board. Iam a 43 yr old man, and suffer from terrible panic disorder. In fact, I'm back in psychiatric treatment after a good several years of being panic free.

I am like you, I fear heart disease, and everything that goes along with it.

Well, let me tell you...with the help of a prominent cardiologist and a top-notch psychiatrst in my area, very slowly but surely I'm getting things under control.

I am on a beta-blocker...Toprol XL, and yes, I was petrified to take it for the same reasons you mentioned...but, I took that first dose, and then, Bam....I felt good. I've been on it now for 2 months and no problems what so ever.
Tracey, take the pill....It will help you, dear......Jerry

Hi i was wondering has the doctor ever gave you meds for panic? I dont remember seeing you say anything about that! You no I can really relate to what your talking about! I'm 27 years old and i have suffered from panic attacks and these pvc's sence i was 19, they just came on all of a sudden! I think the skip beats caused the panic attacks though cause i'd get them first and then go into a full blown panic attack and end up in the E.R ever time! I have learned to control my panic lots better now and have noticed a big difference in my skip beats! i use to get them all day long and now only get them every now and then! Even though i have my panic better controlled i still dont live what i call a normal life! I never can go out with my friends unless its like to a movie or to eat something like that, I cant go hang out to a club like they do or i will freak out so i just have to avoid things that cause me to panic and I do okay! I've thought about taking meds for it and like i said in another post my doctor has tryed to give me the blockers back when i was having them everyday and I couldnt even take them! Im scared to take just about anything but tylenol (lol) Anyway if you ever need someone to talk to I'm here and I hope everything gets better for you!

Carrie,
are you panic attacks the results of WORRYING about the pvc's (extra beats)?? You are very young and you are wasting your life away. If the doctor has not found any major problems except the the (not dangerous) pvc's, then PLEASE do not worry!! As I said before, I would not hesitate taking the beta blockers...you are not having any kind of "heart failure" and EVEN IF YOU WERE, it is very managble with medication . Beta blockers will help you enormously!! DO NOT WORRY!!

Thanks for all your wonderful replies. Its made me feel a lot better. I panicked so much the day i took them that sadly i had a massive attack all day yesterday and im still recovering now.
Im still a little frightened though and im constantly checking if my heart rate is too slow and im trying to walk slow because i feel that if my heart rate rises, it wont be able to cos of the meds and therefore it cant do its job properly. Im such a bag of nerves! As i said, im only on 10mg three times a day so its quite low. Maybe the more i take them, the more this neurotic feeling will go.

Question Hi tracey2775

Sorry to bother you again - you kindly replied to my question about anxiety and its affect on the heart.
Just wanted to ask if your heart raced in brief periods or if it was constant. Mine used to go fast whenever I stood or did anything (all the time, not just in a bought like a panic attack) although now it just goes fast all the time (80's-90's even when laying down).
I'm also getting the feeling of pressure in my neck, chest and jaw and I don't always feel that anxious.
If you can respond to my TERRIFIED message (this will then alert me that you've responded) I'd be really grateful for a longer chat as I'm really bricking it over this whole thing.

Cheers,
Soodle

Question Re: Im on beta blockers and im so frightened

Hello Parkermom, I have a question. I take Diovan with diuretic for high blood pressure and I take 60 mg. Propanolol (30 mg. 2x a day). Besides feeling slowed down I feel like I can't get my breath when I walk even a few feet. I did not feel this way before the beta blocker. I am assuming that this feeling is from these pills. Have you ever experienced difficulty with feeling like your chest just doesn't have enough air in it to move forward? Thanks.

Re: Im on beta blockers and im so frightened

Why would you take a med you don't absolutely need? Panic attacks can be controlled by you...you do not need meds. I have had panic attacks all my life. I was told to get on beta blockers too but refused because I took them once and they made my heart feel odd. I was also on Xanax and Ativan and they both made me feel like a zombie and they are highly addictive.

Trust me....you can do this without meds. I stay away from caffeine, and I exercise and drink tons of water and a multi vitamin with magnesium. This all helps me. Panic attacks are related to your nervous system, not your heart. What else helps me is when I used to have panic attacks, I would breath into a paper bag or carry along a little beanie baby by son had and it would sooth me by rubbing it and taking deep breaths. Whatever helps.

And if I were you, I would have my doc check me for Mitral Valve Prolapse. Lots of people have this and it's not serious....but can be the hidden trigger behind your panic attacks. I have it.

Im not taking them for Panic Attacks, im taking them for skipped beats, fast heart rate and fluttering and i can honestly say they have made a massive difference. Ive been checked out by a heart specialist and have had 4 or 5 ECG'S but found nothing wrong.
