Please help if you can, I'm worried about my husband. - Heart Disorders Message Board

My husband's been having weird symptoms lately and he refuses to consider going to the doctor. I'm worried that he may possibly be having a heart attack, but I'm not sure. He says he's had chest pain for a couple weeks now. The chest pain has been in the center of his chest, by his brestbone with a burning type pain (he thought maybe he has been having bad acid reflux or ulcers). When they first started he said they weren't "that bad" occuring every day or two, and occuring with vigorous physical activity, but tonight he had terrible chest pain and began vomiting (no blood) shortly after eating. Afterwards he felt better. Along with the chest pain he's been having shortness of breath (which he thought was just his acute ashma). I'm very worried that it may be a heart attack. Any advice or information would be greatly appreciated.

Gracie, next time this happens I would be heading to the er. How old is your husband? My husband had his first heart attack when he was 45, he is now 50, had another slight one last winter, and has a stent. If you go to the er, they will do bloodwork which should show in a matter of hours whether or not he had a heart attack. At the next sign of pain, give him a baby aspirin, have him chew it, and head to the er, its better to be safe than sorry,remember time is tissue, the sooner he gets there, the better. Now that being said, it may not be his heart, but why take that chance? Good luck.

These are classic symptoms of angina/heart attack. Call 9-1-1 for him if you must. (Especially if he is over 40, or even younger if he is overweight, smokes, has a family history, etc.).

p.s. I have heart disease so I know whereof I speak; I would be dead if I had continued to ignore these symptoms: I had a 99% blockage in my LAD (the "widowmaker" that killed Tim Russert).

I agree with the others. He needs to see a doctor right away. Is there any way you can drag him to an emergency clinic? Can you make a doctor's appointment for him and inform him on the morning of the appointment that the two of you are going to go to visit Dr. X that morning? He may or may not cooperate if you take over the making of the appointment. You know him better than we do. Unfortunately, he's an adult, and while you can support him in lots of ways, including making appointments for him that he doesn't want to make for himself, you can't make him go if he totally balks. I hope he cooperates. He should see a doctor.
