| Infant PDA closure and High Respiratory Rate
Please can someone help or advise if they have been through or seen anything similar.
My newborn whom was born in Feb 09 was diagnosed after birth with having a heart condition – an open PDA and ASD.
He has had his PDA closed by catheter at 6 weeks and in week 8 he has had to have a blood transfusion (75ml blood based on his weight of 5Kg) as his Haemoglobin levels dropped to 7.1 post surgery.
Since birth his respiratory rate has been at between 75 – 90. With the closure of the PDA it was hoped to ease and bring down his respiratory rate which at yet has not occurred. He has only just had his transfusion in the last 24 hours and the consultants are hopeful by bringing his Haemoglobin levels back up this may settle his respiratory rate.
He has been give nasal feeds for the last 4 weeks on infratrini – (high calorie milk)
He still requires nasal oxygen 0.5 litres. With this assisted oxygen his stat levels are approx 95 – 100. If the nasal is turned off it drops to approx. 70 –80.
The pressures in his lungs seem normal.
Is their anyone that can help to shed some light on what may be causing the high respiratory rate and the need for assisted oxygen. My son is in the hands of experienced Cardiologists and Paediatrics to which l am grateful. I wanted to see if anyone out there has ever had or seen something similar.
Any feedback will be appreciated.
Thanks
