worried my teenage daughter having problems

Hello everyone. I use the boards alot but this is a new one for me. I have a 16yr old who has been experiancing alot of problems on & off. It seems for the most part to be triggered by physical activity. Took her in when she was in grade school with chest pain, said it was growing pains. Then again when she attempted soccer a couple yrs ago & doctor thought she was suffering hypotension. Now shes in cheerleading & same things occuring. Chest pain, short of breathe, heart palpatations (sp?), pain going down the left arm, dizziness. Now its waking her up in her sleep. We have Arterial Septal defect in our family & have had 2 neices diagnosed with this in their teens, one while running track passed out cold. Both ended up with surgery.
Im calling her doctor today as this has me concerned more then I can say & of course she is scared. It seems to be occuring more & more since she joined cheerleading. She had the 24hr moniter on in the past & an EKG & If I remember correctly an echocardiagram, but nothing showed.
Anyone here with ASD? As
a mom this has me worried sick. Please share any knowledge you may have. Thanks for taking the time to read this & god bless, Sammy

Re: worried my teenage daughter having problems

I am sorry that you have been so worried about your daughter having a potential problem. I do believe that some doctors just may not be taking your daughter's problems seriously due to her young age, but if you feel something is wrong I would definitely pursue finding a good cardiologist. I am sure there are tests that can be done that haven't been up until this point that may give you some answers. I will keep you and your daughter in my prayers.

Re: worried my teenage daughter having problems

I just wanted to reply as I have a daughter that started having similar symptoms as an adolescent and was assured that it was just "growing pains" also. It was later as she became a young adult that she was diagnosed with Mitral Valve Prolapse. I do think that often a family physician or peds may discount it to hormonal influense in young girls and not really take a close enough look. I agree that I would take your daughter to a specialist, taking all the tests that she has had previously with you and let them work her up as well. I know from experience that these type problems can come on suddenly in some and gradually in others. Based on the family history (we had 3 other women in extended family with MVP) that it is often overlooked. I would stress the concern since there is a family history of ASD. I also would take the time to write down a detailed history of all her symptoms over the last year (s) and take with you. I hope you get some answers soon. I know how worried we parents can be when it comes to our children.
