Hello, I've been on Metoprolol 25 mg twice a day for two months and for the past few weeks, my feet and legs feel swollen, like they are retaining water or fluid they also itch real bad. Plus, every now and then I get bad headaches in the back of my head. I also get numbness and tingeling in my arms and hands. I also have a hard time sleeping. I have a question for anyone here who is on Metoprolol or any kind of beta blockers, do these side effects go away with time or do they stick around as long as you are on them? If they do stick around, other than by getting off of the beta blockers do you know of any other ways I can cope with these side effects? Final question, how common is diabetes a side effect of beta blockers, I know that it can cause diabetes but is it extremely common? I thank you all for your time and for your responses. Take care.

I've been on metoprolol for over 4 years.
After 2 months, your body should have adjusted to the medication and any side effects should have lessened or subsided by now. If the side effects are too bothersome, it may be time to switch to another medication.
I don't think that beta blockers themselves cause diabetes, but for people who are predisposed to developing diabetes beta blockers increase the risk. This is probably because beta blockers can cause tiredness and with that decreased activity level and weight gain which both increase the risk of developing diabetes. So maintaining a healthy diet and activity is important.
