My dad has had a pacemaker/defibulator for several years. He now is in end stage heart failure. If he should "sleep away", how will the defib work? Will it keep shocking him back to life? I don't want his last memory of this world to be painful for him! He is basically ready to die. Any information on this would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.
A pacemaker is designed to all both sections pumping and contracting at the same time (to keep a good rhythm) If he should go, he wont feel anything the pacemaker isn't design to re-start a heart, so depending on the type it make shock him 2-3 times and then stop.
What a great question. I too have a pacemaker and defib. and was very concerned about the same thing so I asked my Dr who is in charge of the pacemaker clinic that checks my pacemaker every 4 months. He said that it can be turned off. Just call your Dads cardiologist and ask him to please send someone to turn the pacemaker/ICD off. Good luck to you and so sorry about your Dad. I went through it a few years back and it is no fun.
