Pneumonia/Broken Ribs

My Dad recently passed away. The death certificate said pneumonia as number 1 cause and accident at home, broken ribs as number 2 cause. Could we have prevented this? His blood pressure had dropped very low when my Mom took him to the hospital. He was having trouble breathing. He also had heart trouble.
The echogram showed his heart was working only at 25%.
He had been getting weaker and weaker over the last few months and then when he broke his ribs, he seemed to really get weak. He had some fluid around his heart and a high white cell count. The doctor decided to take care of the infection first and not to drain the flood around the heart. He kept an ice bag on his lower left side to help relieve the pain in his ribs and used a heating pad too at times. He was taking pain medication for awhile, but said it didn't help that much. Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Pneumonia/Broken Ribs

The only thing I can tell you what I was told when I broke my rib 2 weeks ago. The doctor said they don't give 'rib-belts' to patients anymore because they tend to cause pneumonia. Patients do not breathe deep with them and fluid tends to build. Did he have one?

Re: Pneumonia/Broken Ribs

My Dad did ask for a rib belt at the doctor's office.
He had broken ribs before and used one. He was 85 years old and I am sure his age and the condition of his heart was a disadvantage. We told him to breath deeply and he tried to do so. His blood pressure dropped so low that he was scared enough to let my Mom take him to the hospital. He also was having some kidney problems at the time. Did your doctor ask you to come back for a check-up? Broken ribs are very painful no matter what age you are. Thanks for replying to my e-mail.
