3 years of chronic chest pain - please help

Iím a 29 year old male that has experienced constant chest pain for the previous 3 years. The pain can range from dull to intense with no apparent cause or reason. The pain is located basically at my heart and it feels internal to my ribcage. Iíve been to multiple doctors, specialist etc. with no help. Iíve had blood work, multiple EKGís, a CT scan with contrast of my chest, stress test, electrocardiogram, multiple chest X-rays, oxygen level test, and a endoscope. Iíve been cleared (and told I was in good health) by 2 ER doctors, my family doctor, my GI doctors, and my cardiologist. They all diagnosed me with stress. I do sometimes feel stress and sometimes I even feel like Iím having a panic attack but it seems to come on without a discernable cause. (For example sometime bad will happen and I will have bad chest pain 4 days later.) The only thing that seems to help the pain is to stay very active both mentally and physically to keep my mind off of the pain. Working out vigorously seems to help. In order to treat the possible anxiety issues Iíve tried martazipine, lexapro, prestiq, lorazepam, and wellbutrin Ė none of which seem to help. In order to fight possible acid reflux Ė Iíve tried zantac, carofate, prevacid and kapidex. Ė none of which seem to help. Iíve taken anti-inflammatory medicine and rest in case the pain was caused by costochondritis or tietze syndrome. Iíve seen chiropractors to see if the pain was due to back trouble. The thorasic region of my back is in bad shape and I do have constant pain in my upper back to go along with the chest pain. Out of desperation I tried all of the remedies in the Natural Cures book including dietary changes, apple cider vinegar, no caffeine, only organic foods etc.Ė no help. Iíve used stress CDís, candles etc. Ė no help. Iíve even tried prayer and holy water. If anyone can provide advice that could help me, I would be eternally grateful. Please Help me!

It does seem like you have been through all of the Dr.s I could not even take a guess except stress. Stress will cause a lot of things.

Sorry I wish I could help more

If you get anxiety or stress diagnosed and the meds. for that do not give you relief ... my advise is to go to a "Pain Unit". I do not know how you called it in USA but here are specialized doctors, normally in large hospitals, that do not try to diagnose or to cure you, they have remedies just to mitigate pain.

Good luck,

Jesus

Re: 3 years of chronic chest pain - please help

Good morning,
I read your post and it could have been written by me nearly word for word when I was 27 years old. I went through it all. I had a GP put me on four different heart medications, etc., etc. I remember telling my pregnant wife while crying one night that I just wanted to live until my son was born. It was horrible.
Then I moved to another city and selected a cardiologist as my GP. The third time I went to his office with chest pain and palpatations he looked at me and said "You are too young to have this going on. Let's find the answer." He sent me immediately to the hospital and had an angiogram done. He said it was normal, admitted me to the hospital for monitoring and removed me from all heart medications. Two days later I was discharged. He told me to stop smoking, stop caffene, and find a way to remove the stress from my life. Until last month (I am now 63) I never had another episode of chest pain or palpatations.
I guess what I'm saying is that if I were in your shoes I would demand an angiogram. It will put your mind at ease and let you get on with your life. And if, by chance, there is a problem they can fix it.
Just for your information, a normal stress test does not mean there is no blockages in your arteries. The "Gold standard" (and the only way they can actually see your arteries) is with an angiogram.
Good luck to you.

Hello, I really feel for you because I went through the same thing. Traveling Bob hit the nail on the head when he suggested the angiogram.
If your pain comes on with exertion, you most probably have a blocked artery in your heart. This can only be seen with an angiogram. Last March I went through all of your symptoms & tests until I got the angiogram, and
found out I had a 95% blockage in my left ventricle. After a heart stent was placed in the artery to open it up via my femoral artery, I finally got rid of the pain. Good Luck to you and let us have an update on your progress!
