Heart Seems To Pause, Then Re-Start With A Thump - What's Wrong?
For a while now, I have had a strange occasional pronounced heartbeat. My heart seems to take a short pause, then the next beat is a strong thump.
It can happen as an occasional one off, or several times in a row, ie. pause - thump - several normal beats, then pause, thump again. It doesn't really affect my life, and there is no pain.
It happened a bit more often recently on holiday, when I eat and drank a bit more than I normally would.
What is likely to be wrong? Is it serious? What are the treatments? Is it doing any damage?

Obviously, nobody could tell for sure over the internet and it could be a lot of things, but it sounds like PVC's: Premature Ventricular Contractions. I suffer from them too, as do many of the people on this board. I am told by my doctor and cardiologist that they are benign and common, and my impression is that this is by far the most likely thing. The holidays (stress) and eating (especially alcohol? coffee?) would tend to aggravate them.
When I had them just occasionally, I just lived with them. When they started to suddenly happen every day for an hour + I went to see my doctor and I'm still not done with the process of verifying that this is all they were. Please don't ask me if that effort has been worth it; I really don't know.
I've talked with people and seen people on this board who have them almost 24x7. There is a thread: PVC's: Your opinion matters or something like that, that talks about it more. You might want to check it out; it was just a week or two ago.
For what it's worth, I know how scary it is.

You could call 911.The emergency room is good for people who wonder if there is something seriously wrong with their heart.

I get PVC's constantly when I workout and don't even flinch! I had AVNRT and an ablation cured me the end of February and the electrophysiologist told me I would continue to get PVC's and not to worry because they would no longer turn into a heart rate of 180 - 240 and they don't. I agree, they are common and seem quite harmless unless they turn into something else.
