How do you know...

When to go to the ER?

Quick background: I'm 42 and have been dealing with a painful mystery illness for 2 years. It's most likely RA, but could be Lupus. I've been on so many different drugs and nothing has worked for me.

I started a low dose of prednisone a week ago (4 mg). A few days later, I had a weird episode of what felt like my heart racing, chest tightness, slight pain...
Then it stopped after about 10 minutes. The next day it happened again. I called my rheumatologist and since it was 5:00 on Friday, he wanted me to go to the ER.

My husband says it's silly, but my mom and her dad both had heart attacks, so I feel like I should stay on top of anything heart related. Plus I have high blood pressure off and on. Not a good thing...

Husband won. We didn't go.

Next day, rheumy leaves message saying he wants to know what ER docs said.
Ugh.

I'm having the feelings again now, but husband still says I shouldn't go to ER.
Should I? What symptoms should I NOT ignore?

Thanks!

Re: How do you know...

if my doctor told me, or my husband to go to the ER, I would go. Better safe than sorry I should think! Hope you are doing better now.

Re: How do you know...

Prednisone has a whole laundry list of side effects (and some people are much more sensitive, even at a very low dose - me being one of them), some just bothersome, but some can be quite serious. I would count any kind of undiagnosed chest pain in the second category and go to the ER as soon as it happens again.
