My mother-in-law had open heart surgery Dec2009

My mother-in-law had open heart surgery Dec2009 but still isn't 100%. Her rehab has been hit or miss (mostly miss! ) & she still complains of shortness of breath. Right now, it's about 30 degrees outside & said that the cold takes her breath away & she runs out of ANY energy she had by early afternoon. I am understandably very concerned because she is such a sweetheart. I feel so powerless & try to encourage her to get out more. I even bought a pedometer for her.

My question is: Since this is apprx. 15 months after her surgery, are these symptoms common? Also, what would you suggest? Every time she goes to the cardiologist, I try to find out what the doc said, but nothing I've heard has addressed my fears. This is my first post to you alls message board, but I am fighting lyphoma & their message board is great. I am sure the same is true of you all!

Thanks & look forward to hearing back from you soon!

Why did they operate on her and what did they correct?

Did she have plugged arteries? If so, what type of dietary changes did she make? Is she overweight?

Did she have any other problems with her heart that weren't corrected, such as heart valve problems? ..... ascending or descending aortic enlargement? ...... enlargement or thickening of heart walls/septum?

How is her Blood Pressure?

What were the results from her last EKG?

What were the results from her last Echocardiogram?

How old is she?

Does she have any other health problems, such as Diabetes?

Re: My mother-in-law had open heart surgery Dec2009

Hi Bargainkween,
I had heart surgery in Oct 2009 and can honestly say it took me a good 12 months to start and feel normal again.
You must remember it's major surgery and some people recover faster than others, a lot depends on her age and any other health problems she may have.

Walking is big part of the recovery process, your mother in law must walk every day.
Does she have a treadmill? If not see if can buy or rent one.

It may take time but she will start and feel better.
