My heart hurts when I cough.

I'm starting to get worried because the muscle around my heart hurts badly when I cough. I had hit that area with my fist several times the other day. I know it sounds weird but it didn't hurt then. It was sore the next day and that's when the pain started. I figured I'd be fine but it's been at least a couple days and it doesn't seem to be getting any better. I'm starting to get worried that I've got a heart disorder or something. I don't have insurance but I'm hoping someone might be able to help. The sooner the better. Please? It's allergy season so it's hard to avoid coughing.

Re: My heart hurts when I cough.

Your heart is very protected behind your breastbone. You probably have bruising on the breastbone, and that would definitely hurt when you cough. if your heart was damaged, it would not take coughing to hurt it, it would be obvious all the time (breathless, sweaty etc). If you are otherwise on your feet and functioning, then I would say it is not serious. Take some pain killers and rest. If it gets worse or you get any of the other symptoms, then go to the ER.

Re: My heart hurts when I cough.

You're probably right. I'm still able to function but there's definite soreness. Out of curiousity, do you know how long something like that would take to heal?

Re: My heart hurts when I cough.

It is hard to say. Bruising usually resolves over a week or two, if you have damaged the actual bone, it will take longer. Is there any bruising or swelling visible? Are you mobile, that is, can you bend and flex without pain? Keep posting and let us know how you get on. Cheers, Sera

Re: My heart hurts when I cough.

There doesn't appear to be any visual bruising or swelling. It does however hurt to bend and flex. The bone seems to be near my shoulder because that whole area's been pretty sore. I think I might have slept on it wrong last night because I could barely move without hurting when I woke up this morning.

Re: My heart hurts when I cough.

There is probably swelling inside the joints, that would hurt. Maybe you need to get it examined by a doctor. Just to rule out breaks etc. It is a good sign that you are able to sleep.
