EKG normal chest pain still there. Dr does not think it's anything

I have been having chest pains for over a year now. Started as just a pressure in the center of my chest but has now sharp pains have started accompanying the tightness on the left side. Literally feels like I'm dying. I have been to my dr over 7-9 times in the last year and just returned from the er tonight due to a severe episode.
I have had 3 EKG with all results normal. I have had a holter monitor on last week, however have not had the results given to me yet. I had a chest x-ray that was listed as normal.
Dr thought it was heartburn, however I have tried prilosec, pepcid, tums, and alka seltzer with no affect at all. He later believed it is anxiety and prescribed Xanax. This helps if I take it soon enough before an episode for the fear but the chest pain still comes no matter what. I just don't freak out about it as much. I feel like my anxiety is real but that there is an underlying problem that they are not finding or not searching for.
I am going back to the dr tomorrow and am going to ask for a referral to a specialist. I want to request a stress test, echo, and a check for angio after reading others stories on this board. Is there anything else that it could be?
I have never smoked, I'm 6'2", 250lbs, don't exercise regularly, have had heart issues in my family ( mother and grandfather)
I'm really scared that I am not being completely diagnosed and just being dismissed as someone with anxiety. Please help.

Since you have a family history of cardiac problems I'm surprised your Doc hasn't sent you for a stress test.

Ask for the stress test - tell your Dr you want a cardiac perfusion scan done.

Good luck.

Re: EKG normal chest pain still there. Dr does not think it's anything

Don't make too strong a connection between a good EKG and there being no problem with your heart. I am (actually was) similar physically to you, but significantly older. There is no family heart history and I have never smoked.

When I went to my doctor a couple of months ago for some very minor chest pains, the EKG that they did in the office was perfect. Ten minutes later I was on my way to the hospital for an angiogram, and a day after that I had open heart surgery for 5 blockages to my arteries. I have lost a fair amount of weight, which is important. I've changed my diet and exercised a lot - part of a cardiac rehab program.

If you believe that this is being misdiagnosed, look for another doctor. It might be nothing, but it's been my experience if it continues for a long period of time, it's something that needs to be identified.

Good luck

Re: EKG normal chest pain still there. Dr does not think it's anything

I'm still waiting for my referral to the cardiologist and thanks to the long weekend, I'm thinking it will be some time before I get into the office for the tests.
This weekend has already been hard. I have had a constant pain (pressure) in my chest accompanied by heart flutters. I feel like whatever is happening it is getting worse and I really fear that they are just going to tell me I am fine and send me home. I can say that whatever is happening is not normal and that there is a definite problem.
For those of you that had a normal EKG then were sent in for operations, how did they find what was wrong? I have been reading on the board several cases of EKG, stress test, etc normal but they did end up finding something at some point but not sure what tests were done. I want to feel normal again.

For those that had problems that the EKG results were normal. What were your exact symptoms? For me, I have a constant pressure in the center to left side of my chest, followed by light headedness, heart pounding and an occasional sharp pain on my chest with palpations when the episodes start. When serious episodes come on I have found that I cannot talk or think straight. I'm sure that is part of the "panic" attack portion and I do not deny that, however. I am not experiencing panic attacks for 8-10 hours a day.
I take aspirin and a xanax, however it doesn't do anything for the chest pressure/pain.

thanks again for any responses.

Re: EKG normal chest pain still there. Dr does not think it's anything

In my case, there was sharp pain - but very localized. It was high on my left chest, and about the diameter of a nickel. It only happened when I was walking, and stopped almost immediately after I stopped walking.

They didn't do a stress test because I was already having the chest pain. Since the EKG was normal, and they knew something was wrong, they skipped the stress test because they didn't feel it would tell them anything that they didn't already know. Normally a stress test is a great idea, and preferably not a chemical stress test, but that's my bias, not necessarily supported by facts. The next step was an angiogram, which told them a lot - sadly.

Good luck

Re: EKG normal chest pain still there. Dr does not think it's anything

I went through the same thing. Until I had to change Doctor because of a change in insurance. new Dr ran more test, he did a nuclear stress test which showed I had a 90% blocking, this has now been repaired by angioplasty and a stent. However will doing the angioplasty they found I only have one artery so I have now been referred for surgery. So keep at your doctors demand more test. A CT of the heart will show is anything is wrong.

HI I have friend who had similar symptons. In the ER a couple of times in a week. They could never find anything so they sent him to see a psychiatrist. They thought it was all in his head. It turned out that his wife found solution by reading a newspaper article. To make the story short, this fellow went on CARDIZEM 180 mg. NO chest pains or ER visits since. The pain is probably spasms in coronary arteries, wont show anywhere. You have nothing to loose to try out CARDIZEM. I hope this helps.

Re: EKG normal chest pain still there. Dr does not think it's anything

I finally got a referral to a cardiologist. The cardiologist recommended a stress test but I am now waiting on approval for that. It has been 1.5 weeks since the recommendation and nothing. I am going to call today to followup, it is getting to be a bit ridiculous.

I did have additional symptoms last week, however. My chest actually stopped hurting for a few days and I felt a lot better, but then one night, I was laying down and got very very dizzy and lightheaded. The room was spinning but I still had my balance when I stood up. It felt like I was going to pass out, kind of like a medicine high but I was not and did not take any medicine for at least 3 days before. This lasted off and on until the next morning. A couple of days later my chest pain started to come on again and I was having an episode when my wife looked at me and said my lips were very blue. I did feel light headed again as well. I'm not sure if any of those symptoms are related or if they are just coincidental?
