Hard time adjusting to Meds

First post...
I am 57yrs I was diagnosed with DCM...EF was 31% constant ache in upper back,
SOB and burning in chest walking about 10mins.

Doc started me about a week ago
Carvedilol 3.125mg 2x a day
Benazepril 5mg 2x a day

I know these meds are a must if any hopes to recover and slow progression.
I know these meds take getting use to.

I didn't expect them to be as rough as they are...
I feel drunk, vertigo,
can't function to work or drive.

So I just stopped taking them in the day and only dose in evening when at home.
Please tell I will adjust... it just takes more time.
If I'm having such a hard time at lowest doses how can I ever get to target dose.
Getting stressed out about the Meds ain't helping.
I'm a newbie need some mentoring here,
my current Cardiologist is refering me to heart failure specialist...appt. in 2 weeks.

Been doing alot of reading trying to be informed...very scary prognosis.
Trying not to get streesed out but easier said then done.
Already worried about ICD and its not even been recommended yet !

Wheeew.. had to talk to somebody, any info would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry that you are having to go through Heart Failure and these health problems. It really changes our lives, doesn't it? I found myself living my Heart Failure 24 hours per day. I couldn't get away from it! I couldn't go one day without it reminding me that I had it, either through tiredness, fatigue, breathing problems, weakness, chest pains, hard-thumping heartbeat, etc.

My doc also had me on Coreg (Carvedilol) 3.125mg 2x a day. I read through all of the clinical test reports. Almost all of them, especially the successful ones, tested 25mg Carvedilol 2x a day. So, I switched Cardiologists, got the new one to give me 25mg Carvedilol 2x a day, and am I glad that I did!

I have never gotten used to the side effects of my meds. I just try to deal with the symptoms. I am also near 70 and retired, so that helps.

Rough is putting it mildly. I take my 25mg Coreg at 5am and 5pm. The 5pm only seems to make me sleepy, but the 5am morning dose fatigues and weakens me from about 6am thru 10:30 am. But, to me, it is the greatest medical discovery in the history of medication and I am soooooo very thankful to be able to take it!

I hope that your Cardiologist is able to get you on medications that are better suited for you, effective and that you can get much better in the future?

Take care..... best of health and luck!

Re: Hard time adjusting to Meds

Thanks for you reply, you certainly give me hope.
I'd like to be on these boards when I'm 70... in the kind of shape your in !!

How long did it take you to build up to 25mg Coreg ?
Do also take a ACEI ? Which one, How much ?

I have been doing pretty good with my diet nothing as restrictive as yours but pretty good compared to the way I was eating just about anything.

Whole grain cereal and fruit for Brkfast.
Salad and a little eggs whites for lunch.
Small piece of chicken or fish with green veggies for dinner.
try to keep it low sodiun, low fat ...
hardly any snacking just some Wasa bread crackers or Kashi bars,
fruit sugar free jello... its not easy eating healthy...lol its like a fulltime job.

I have lost 15lbs already in 8wks... another 10lbs and I will be at my ideal chart weight.

I have been walking about 2 miles a day slow 40mins a little burning in the chest and some sob.
I start Cardio Rehad soon and I hope to get more stamina for more exercise and then stick to it.
I'm doing everything I think I can do to help my condition and I'm open to any suggestions ...this the best health board on the net.

So I'm glad to have found it and I hope to be around awhile.
