Heart rate issues taking beta-blockers
After being diagnosed with CAD earlier this year, my cardiologist put me on Coreg (beta-blocker). Before doing this my heart rate ranged from a resting heart rate of 48 to 185 when I run. As I'm 62, he was concerned about the high heart rate when I ran, which I do regularly, ~20 miles/week. Taking the Coreg my heart rate now ranges between 38 and 163. Now he is concerned about the low, resting heart rate and is suggesting a pacemaker. As I've never had any symptoms I'm not sure what to do. I don't like the idea of getting a pacemaker just to offset a side affect of taking medication. Has anyone else encountered a similar situation? What worked best for you? Should I reduce the Coreg dosage (currently only at 6.25mg)? Should I eliminate the Coreg and try something else, like a calcium-channel blocker? Should I go ahead and get the pacemaker? Any advice is welcome.
