Irregular Heartbeats

I noticed for the first time this morning that I have regular irregular heartbeats.

It's pretty wierd. Sometimes it will feel a though there is a skipped beat, sometimes the rythm will just seem irregular with the intervals between beats. Other times there maybe a double beat. It's honestly all over the place. depending also when I am sitting or lying down.

I would say there is an irregularity each minute to varying degree's.

I have no pains, tightness, nothing than wanting to (burp.)

I took myself off to see my GP this morning, and an ECG was done. While I was waiting to get my blood pressure taken I was able to have a quick glace at the printout, to me it looked all uniform, beats evenly apart.

When I went back to see the doctor he was not concerned but said it would be best to see a cardiologist to do a review and have a look at the EGC and possible follow up tests.

He mentioned something about the ECG showing a flatline or something, and mentioned something about a beat coming in before it was due. I was not sure. As I was sort of freaking out inside my head and getting worried. He called it something, and I think form my research today it might be PAC.

He said I should not worry, and it's most likely nothing, and the cardiologist will be able to check just for safety.

Now this is where I am worried. Today (which is the first time I have started to feel my pulse in a little while) seems to me as I mentioned earlier, the beats are all over the place. Many times I can feel a normal smooth pulse then all of a sudden it will be a skip, when I lie down I can feel many times a skip, maybe a double beat, etc.

I also suffer from reflux and take Zantac when needed. Today I have felt quite a bit of gas as mentioned above, and been wanting to burp for most of the day.

Maybe it's timing but when I breath in at times, I feel like I want to burp and also get the skip beat . I honestly dont know if there is a connection.

Some history, I am quite obese, and I have taken time off work to look after my mother who is in heart failure. And I realised today i have put on more weight. I also take Micardis plus to keep blood pressure under control.

I really got to change my lifestyle I know that for sure and started from today after this all happened. (wake up call for sure)

I have to ring Monday for the specialist appointment. but right now I am so stressed about this that I feel like if it does not go away I will go to emergency just to get some investigation done faster.

ECG was done, told nothing to worry about, then why am I always feeling irregular heartbeats.

Re: Irregular Heartbeats

Hey, I also have the skipped beats, double beats, fluttering...you name it I have experienced it. I went to the er then to the cardiologist and had the ekg, echo, and heart monitor and all they told me was they saw some skipped beats. I'm not sure what it is but it is controlling my life. Like today everytime I sit down it starts or when I drink or eat something it starts. It scares me to death I wish it would just beat normal. I am sorry you are going through this. Mine started 5yrs ago and it seems as the years go by it gets worse. You will have to let me know what your cardiologist says. I would love to see a new one but I have no insurance and it is very expensive. Well I am not giving you much help but wanted to let you know that I feel the same as you and today it has beat irregular all day. Hope you can get some answers.

First of all calm down, it is perfectly normal to skip beats which can feel like fluttering. I will go with PVC which is what I have and they are skipped beats and apparently most everyone has them and sometimes they mean nothing and other times they point to a more serious problem. Most cardiologists will tell you they are benign but they are always acknowledged and counted for most medical testing like sleep apnea testing they are reported and for EKG's which is for everything cardiac related. Now I do have cardiac issues which is why I would know this, but I have also heard the speal that most everyone has them and they are nothing also. I have been diagnosed with Congestive Heart Failure CHF, Cardiac Artery disease CAD, and Heart Attaak HA/MI but having PVC's are still considered pretty benign. Yes they are noted, but unless I would be having Tachycardia which is rapid heart beating of over 100 or a certain amount of pvc's in a certain time period they would be considered stable/benign. The other two conditions mentioned might point to something more serious going on.

Gastric issues such as reflux or Gerd can cause symptoms that mimic Heart conditions but you mentioned burping and that would point more to a Gastric issue more than a heart related issue.

Your dr. is wise to refer you to get it all checked out as any cardiologist will tell you that in many cases until they can rule out you have any serious heart condition they would rather take the cautious approach...so the process you will be going through will be making sure your heart is in good working order and your symptoms will probably then be said to be related to Gastric issues or they might even suggest panic attacks though nothing you mentioned suggested it being panic attacks but once the heart is ruled out those are the two basic diagnosis they usually fall back on.

Now as someone who is also obese, I want to make sure that you want to hope it is not heart related so then you can have a chance of losing some of your weight before it leads to heart issues. Heart issues are not fun and it is a club no one ever wishes to join. So I hope in your case this is an early wake up call so you can have a second chance and so you don't have to join the ranks, but seriously since you mentioned burping I will guess it is your reflux or you might have even developed Gallbladder issues. At least that is what I am keeping my fingers crossed for you to have

Re: Irregular Heartbeats

Sorry to hear you are suffering from this and much longer than I have. So many people seem to suffer from this but you were the first I have read that told me how frequent it is.

Many people post they get it, but I never can tell if they get it every minutes or maybe only a skip beat here or there a few times a day. Which is not constant.

Well today "knock on wood" I can sometimes feel a skipped beat, but nothing like yesterday, which was very similar to your's, when I was standing up, sitting down, lying down it would change the beats. very worrying for me.

Woke up this morning rolled over on different sides and all was normal.

I just had my blood pressure medication, Micardis plus 80/25, and I read the info leaflet and many of the side effects I have had since taking the medication.

And abnormal heart rate is one of them. So I just took it and will keep an eye on any side affects that happen.

Yesterday I had really bad excess wind in the stomach that was wanting to come up and every time I felt it I also felt a skip. This wind is another side effect. So maybe it compounds. I will ask the cardiologist when I see him. Which is hopefully not long.

I am freaking out 'less', but I am really overweight and want to get out, but this is freaking me out thinking I will heave a heart attack if I do anything. Vicious Circle.

Re: Irregular Heartbeats

I went back to the doctor today because I was still freaking out a bit. I am still getting them at random times lasting anywhere from seconds, to over a few minutes, to hours, the beats are not always abnormal but happens throughout those times periods at different times.

And I went back because I wanted to understand fully what the ECG meant when it was done on me

He stated that I have what would be classified as PAC and saw and some Ectopic beats. He went on to say that it simply required further investigation by a Cardiologist in order to check things out fully.

He said the ECG was not dangerous and that I could go on about my normal life. And when i asked about my exercise like walks etc. He said the more the better.

I also today made the earliest appointment with the Cardiologist, and that is on the 19th December (3 weeks away) sigh....

I am starting to think that to some small degree I might have had these things for many years 20+

I am 38, and I remember on occasions when I was 16 or so, I would do exercise and when taking the pulse in the neck sometimes I would feel a skipped beat. I always assumed I just moved my hand or had a neck spasm and missed it. When i would question it I would feel my heart rate and it would always be normal.

So maybe it is very common and I have had them for a long time. I don't know.

I just need to make sure that my weight and years of high blood pressure (which I am being treated for) has not done any damage.

I have had blood tests over the years and things have been normal, my cholesterol has always been fine, never in the danger zone.

It just still freaks me out that I can get normal heart beats, but then other times during the day I sit down, stand up, go for a walk, etc and get skipped beats, and sometimes double beats. They are always very uniform in there abnormal rhythm when they happen.

Either way my GP said I should not be worried and to stop stressing and go and enjoy life and relax. But that is very hard to do when like I said to him that I always thought a good heartbeat was always uniform, and a badheart beat out of time.

I understand this is not the case. But my mother had a quad by-pass years ago and what she went through being cut down the chest and vein taken from the leg, to her health which is really bad now. I just always think that it will be me next.

I am 38, I still want to live a normal healthy life a bit longer, and all I can think right now, is that it's possibly coming to an end. stupid maybe, but in time I will probably get used to whatever is wrong with me.

I post this so anyone else reading can also know that you are not alone. And keeping you up to date on my outcome.

Hopefully my next post will be after I have seen the specialist and had test done, and been given an outcome.

3 more week till cardiologist, I might go crazy before them

A heart that misfires is quite common. Many people suffer from a misfiring heart, whether that means a fast heartbeat, a slow heartbeat, PACs, PVCs, skipped beats, hard beats, double beats, ectopic beats, etc.

In most cases, it does not mean that there is something seriously wrong, right now, but if it continues then, over time, it can negatively effect one's health and one's heart, IMHO.

In my case, I have found many things will agitate my heart and cause it to misfire. Too much salt and/or carbohydrates in my diet; various supplements; an unbalanced diet; allergic reactions to the bed; eating too late at night; medications taken too late at night; supplements or lotions used too late at night; heart valve problems; medications and supplements taken too close to each other, heart disease.

Some of these "triggers" can also cause digestive problems such as reflux.

I am also on heart medications, so some of the things that cause my heart to misfire, might be connected to the meds that I take.

Best of luck and health!

Re: Irregular Heartbeats

Update :

I saw the Cardiologist today. He listened to my heart and said he could hear a murmur (once again freaking me out) as this is the first time I have ever been told this.

So what happened ;

He took blood to mainly test my thyroids, because my last blood test 6 months ago showed that is was slightly high (abnormal)

On the 6th January 2012 I will be getting a 24hr holter monitor to record my heart.

I have another appointment on the 20th of January to review the holter and he said he will do an ultrasound.

He said he does not think it was anything to be concerned about at this time. And was more concerned with getting my thyroid results to see if that could be causing issues.

He mentioned something about possible leakage and maybe hardening of the heart walls or something, and the ultrasound will show that. I asked about getting it done today, and he said he did not see the rush and to wait for the monitor and blood test to be done.

All in all, I don't know what to think, I am 'less' stressed, I still get the skipped and double beats, I know he heard them because I had them while he was taking my blood pressure.

He did not seem concerned one bit, I see him again in a months time.

So I assume for now everything is ok for now. I said is there any chance I will drop dead. He said no.

I asked about stress test, he did not seem the need to do it at this time.

So life goes on.

Re: Irregular Heartbeats

For all those who want an update I have the results from all my tests.

Blood work fine - This includes my trip to the ER 4 days ago when I was getting irregular beats and freaked out. I was not having a heart attack, and all levels were fine.

Holter Monitor - Showed I had ectopic beats, and some 1000 premature beats. Even had a run of 4 beats. Cardio said all are harmless and not to worry.

Had a chest X-ray at hospital that said I was normal but had some Upper lobe blood diversion. Which apparently is an early sign of Heart Problems. The Cardio when he read that said he did not believe that reading and said X-rays are very poor at telling issues with heart size and such. On a side note he mentioned the endless number of X-ray reports that came to him telling him of hearts that were in failure that simply were not the case.

Echo-cardiogram - The Ultra sound showed my heart to be of normal size and all Valves working great and pumping blood fine. Which contradicted some earlier X-rays as I mentioned above which mentioned enlargement of some area of the heart. He said you heart is not at all enlarged.

Bottom line he said you will be feeling the ectopic beats sometimes, and do your best to ignore them, paying attention will only make them worse (I hear that Borther), Stress will make it worse. And for me to stop feeling my pulse.

This Final report on my tests happen about 3 hours ago, and I have never felt more positive since I started having these issues 2 months ago. Last 4 days my family said I was like a Zombie worrying and stressing.

Stress is my killer.
