My boyfriend has been on beta blockers since the beginning of December. He was on metropolol and it wasn't agreeing with him and the doctor switched him to propranolol and this drug is still not agreeing with him. Has anyone had problems with these types of beta blockers or had the same symptoms as him? He said he feels exhausted all the time - day to day it is a different symptom, either sick or just feeling lousy. He is also depressed from these and forgets things too - short term memory loss. I am just curious if these meds can cause these symptoms and he doesn't know on a daily basis how he is going to feel..
You don't mention the dosage he is taking, but it could be possible that the doctor would let him take half the pill in the morning and half later in the day. I am presently taking Metoprolol 50 mg daily up from 25 mg of Atenolol and I have had the tiredness too. I was also trying to cut back on sugar and I figured out my " tired " feeling was low blood sugar. Several times I checked my BP when I was feeling tired and it was pretty low, like 99/56 so I'm not sure what the problem was...Low blood sugar or adjusting to the new dosage.
I suggest getting a blood pressure monitor ( if you don't have one already ) and check it throughout the day, if possible. Keep a record to show the dr.
Hi Jana, I'm not sure what the dosage is. He had an angiograph on 1/19 and they upped his meds then and I think he was taking two per day a that point so I'm really not sure the exact dosage. I think he really needs surgery - as his cardiologist stated and gave him names of surgeons the third week of March. I don't know why he is dragging his feet on it. I think that is why he is so sluggish and feeling lousy all the time.
Thanks

Yep. I take Atenolol 50 mg. twice a day, and I'm so tired that it makes me feel old. I have to fight depression, which makes you even more tired. Lower dose is an option, but for me, even if I shave off 12 mg., I end up getting pains in my inner left breast that come and go, so I go right back up to the 50 mg. Higher doses can make you more tired, but we do take the beta blockers for a reason. I guess the benefits outweigh the side effects. I stay up late at night, but since being on beta blockers, I found I'm going to be even more exhausted, if I don't get enough sleep. Fatigue seems to go hand in hand with bb's, but I just deal with it the best way I know how.
Hey LindaLang !!! Too bad you're having problems with the BB's...When I started on Atenolol back in 2007 I was tired at first but I did feel better. Calmer somehow, strange as it sounds. I have researched BB"s a lot and have just realized they " block " our bodies' response to too much hormone(s) ( triggered by stress usually.) At any rate, my body is adjusting the more ( from 25mg up to 50 ) and I'm not so tired any more.
Hope you feel better soon !
Hi LindaLang,
Thanks for getting back to me! Do the beta blockers make you so tired and depressed that you don't want to get together with friends? He is heading for surgery so hopefully he won't be put back on them for too long after his recovery.

You're welcome! Yes, the bb's definitely cause a lack of interest, to not want to do much of anything, due to the fatigue. I have to force myself to get up and out of the house every day. If he has to stay on a bb after surgery, my doc told me that Coreg doesn't make you as tired as the others. I hope all goes well with his surgery, and he's back to normal again soon!
Beta blockers drains your energy level, drop your heart rate and more..so it is highly possible his synptoms are expected. However if his doctor gave him these meds, he should take them and discuss and change with his doctor.
Hi helpforme,
Thank you for your response. I haven't seen or spoken to him since end of June and he was looking into surgery at Duke Medical. I don't know what is going on with him now but thanks for responding to me.
Are you on beta blockers?
Thanks,

Hi,
I've been on Sotalol for the past 3 years, I think it took me a couple of months or so to get used to the medication and for the dizzyines and whatnot to cease.
I don't have any problems with my Beta Blockers now.
Thanks Vyking - he has been on them since December and they changed the meds in January so I'm not sure - but as of June he was still not feeling well!!
