I had a 'turn' but what was it?

Hi, I had a funny turn last night that scared me, wonder if anyone can tell me what it might be please, or if they've every experienced this.

I have grade 2 heart failure, controlled with Ace Inhibitors and Beta Blockers. Recently ive started to get the Ectopic beats back again, not had these since before they found out i had something wrong with my heart, and it all went away. Anyway, im having these Ectopics and sometimes they are actually hurting me, which they have never done before.
Last night, after eating dinner ( my heart always races after i eat) my heart started racing as per normal, but it felt like it was going much faster than normal, i checked it and it was only in the 90's. But i could tell the heart was working very hard by the horrible feeling in my chest. Then i came over all weak and faint, as though i could not hold my body up. i sat in my armchair, but i even had to lay my head down on the arm as it was a struggle to stay sitting up right. I was trying to tell my husband that something wasn't right and i felt ill, but even talking to him was hard work, i could not open my eyes, it was like i had been drugged and i was fighting to stay awake against the drugs, so weird. The ectopic heart beats started, and my heart felt like it was so struggling, i put my pulse meter thing on my finger, and it said that my oxygen evels had dropped down to 91-93% and they are never normally that low. Do you think i felt this ill because of the oxygen level. This lasted for about an hour, where i could not hold a conversation it was too much hard work, could not open my eyes, but i was still with it so to speak. I felt really really unwell but not sure how to explain it properly.
We were going to go out for a meal last night, but im so glad we didnt as i would have collapsed in the restuarant, hw embarassing.

Any ideas anyone?

What did you have to eat? Do you know how many calories in the meal and how much protein, carbs and fat?

Sorry to hear about your difficulties. I sure hope that you have fully recovered.

I've had heart failure for over 25 years. I used to suffer from similar difficulties.

I think that it was caused when my heart's electrical system malfunctioned to the point of causing my heart to pump poorly (ref:Ejection Factor (EF). When I used to become weak and close to fainting I would immediately get into my recliner, cool down, and rest and relax, so as to not put any more stress on my heart.

The heart rate was not as important, to me, as the quality of how well my heart was pumping.

I am close to 70, and my heart failure and health has really improved during the past eight years, so it can be done. In fact, this last Saturday it took me 40 minutes to spread pesticide throughout my yard, at noon, under the hot 90's sun of South Florida; and then changed the clutch fluid in my truck. Years ago, not only could I NOT tolerate the hot sun, but the slightest physical work or exercise would completely debilitate me, sometimes for days!

If you are interested in how I was able to greatly improve my heart failure and health, please read my thread titled: What I have done to survive Heart Failure & AFib with a high quality of life : http://www.healthboards.com/boards/heart-disorders/742271-what-i-have-done-survive-heart-failure-afib-high-quality-life.html

Re: I had a 'turn' but what was it?

Thank you for your reply Machaon. Well the meal i had eaten was a curry, and i have exactly the same meal every Saturday evening, nothing was new at all. This is why i can't understand what happened. i can only say it was like being drugged, going to faint but not quite passing out, but yes, my heart was going like the clappers. It felt like it was having a real hard time to keep going, even though the rate was only in the 90's, i could feel it thrashing away in my chest violently? And for my oxygen levels to suddenly just drop so low is strange.
As i dont really have the support from my cardiologist i can't just go see her or even tell her, my g.p. is brilliant but does not specialise in hearts, so ijust have to sit here wondering what to do next or whats going to happen next. I just dont know what else to to x

Heart Rate and Heart Rhythm irregularities after eating are not normal. Have you been able to discuss this problem with your "non supportive" cardiologist?

Do you know how many calories were in the meal and how much protein, carbs and fat? How many calories did you consume prior to the curry?

How much sodium and potassium was in your meal/curry and for the day?

You are on an Ace Inhibitor which can subject your metabolism to unhealthy levels of potassium, which can cause all kinds of problems for your heart. Do you know how much potassium was in the meals that you ingested during the week and during the day? Do you take any supplements or vitamin pills?

Re: I had a 'turn' but what was it?

I dont have any idea of exactly what was in the curry carbs/calories etc wise as it was a take away, but i always have the same dishes.I had not eaten much that day to be honest, but that is the norm for me on a Saturday, i sort of save myself for a treat on a Saturday night. Everything i did, i do the same every Saturday! I have told my g.p. and my cardio but they dont make any comment about it, they just say its ok. But i know in myself, what ever happened to me on Saturday was not normal,it was scary. If it happens again im going to have to do something about it, but hopefully it wont.
