rapid heart beat

I have a history of pvc's, and palpitations. Yesterday, after waking with a headache, I took a headache relief otc pill, which consists of acetaminophen, aspirin and caffeine, drank coffee, and took another pill approx. 4 hrs. after the first, drank a little more coffee. I went out, and then drank a coke. About 45 min. after that was driving, and experienced a rapid heartbeat, almost a feeling the heart was jumping out of my chest, had no pain, just a scary feeling was going to ER. Pulled car over, took a few deep breaths, and went away?

My thought was, too much caffeine caused this? Any takes? Im 52.

Re: rapid heart beat

Greetings pizzamkr2! My sympathies for this situation. Welcome to the Heart Disorder Healthboards. Yes, in my opinion caffeine can make the heart go much faster and the other substances might have contributed. A cardiologist could be consulted if desired to be sure the heart is not filled with fatty plaque or electrical problems with it. Of course everyone makes their own health care decisions. It sounded by the description that after starting to the ER a decision was made to go back home because it got better. Peace, sjb
